As per a previous post of mine regarding hire car charges, I've been "done" again!

Picked a car up at Dublin Airport last week and had to pay a €72 deposit for the fuel. I asked to pay in Sterling (on my CC) so i could get the same Sterling refund when I brought the car back fully fuelled........"no problem sir".

Car has to be returned to the compound, (not the desk in the terminal where it was booked-out).........."Sorry sir I do not have the facility here to credit your card in Sterling here...."

Result a £68 bill for the orginal deposit and ONLY a £64 refund.......for NOTHING.

I will get the hire car company to re-imburse me, but what a load of hassle and it is all because of the ridiculous charges the banks make when we use our CC's abroad!

I think the hire car companies make more on the fuelling charges than they do on the actual hire too.

There is no way that a foreign retailer can avoid this issue, whether crediting you in sterling or euros. You might have made money instead. At least you have a capital loss which might be of some use to you in the future. Next time, leave a cash deposit with them.

>>I will get the hire company to reimburse me

On what grounds, exactly?

I hire cars all the time and have never had to pay a deposit for fuel. I always get the car full and if I don't return it full they charge me to fill it up. Is leaving a deposit something specific to Ireland?

I must admit that I've hired from Dublin before and never been asked for a deposit, although many companies pre-authorise the card in case of problems. I tend to use the big 'number one' (mainly because of the free upgrades), and have to admit in the 100 or so hires over the last 3 or 4 years I've never had a single problem / charge / query with them or indeed any of the other companies I've used.

Re: making money on fuel - it also depends on who you book through as well as who you ultimately hire from - for example the low cost booking sites often contain 'hire full return empty' clauses for bookings over 72 hours. Always read the label!

Depends upon who the hire company is. I always use Autoeurope to book my hire cars with (on-line or via telephone, it makes no difference) as they have always provided a really great service and it is an 0800 helpline with NO recorded messages and staff are 100% helpful. The real problem this time was taking the deposit in Sterling and refunding in Euro. They agreed to cover any losses when they could not refund my card in Sterling, but I'll have to chase then for this. Like everything in life you can't have it all your own way!
