I bought a 57 plate 2.0 tdci 140ps mondeo edge from national dealer in December. I notified them within days of taking it away that it had cut out when coming to a slowdown at a roundabout. It was agreed that they would look at it when it went in to have a scratch repainted that had already been agreed.
They said they couldn't find anything wrong but it has done it 7 times in all now and when it cuts out the steering locks of course, very disconcerting and in my opinion dangerous. It is with them again and they called me yesterday asking for more details! When I asked if they had taken it to a Ford service dealer as promised they told me they had been asking lots of people who they knew!
How do I stand legally with this, I am very wary of driving the car as it stands, in fact I don't think I should be driving it. Can I ask for my money back or for a replacement car?
Thanks

The steering does not lock;just loses the power assistance.

Thanks for your help. Whatever it is, I find myself with a car with locked steering as I am in motion coming to a major junction.

The car obviously has a problem with idling. That is the area they need to concentrate on.
You are not helping matters by incorrectly mentioning that the steering locks. It's not locking - it's as has already been mention that once the engine stops, so does the power assisted steering. If it was locked, then the steering wheel would be immovable, this is not the case - it just requires more effort from you to turn the steering wheel. Granted, it's not safe, so the garage need to address the idling issue.

As a temporary measure, it will help if you can keep the engine rotating by changing down as you slow down and only declutching to come to a standstill at the last moment.

As said, keep it in a gear until the car stops completely-at least then you'll have assistance with the steering.
