Got a new injury and now finding it hard to walk, the other day I was parked on a camber and my drivers door slammed into my knee as I opened it, now if I walk for more than quarter of a mile my knew starts playing up (I used to get this as a kid).
Is there anything I can adjust on the door to slow down the shutting motion so that cambers don't cause the door to slam? It seems to have got slightly looser since the snow.
|
Doesn't your Corsa have a door hinge that 'clicks' if you open it halfway, then another when you open it wide? That should hold it in position till you get out.
If it hasn't, or the detent is too weak for the slope of the camber, you'll just have to use your arm to hold the door.
|
It does certainly click (didn't know it was supposed to) it will hold half way but then as I open further out to climb out it slams shut (only if the camber is really bad). The problem is although I can now drive fine I cannot put any weight on my elbow I broke 5 weeks ago which makes climbing out of the car slightly trickier.
It seems to be that something just needs tightening up like on automatic door shutters.

Just put the gravity switch to off, Rattle. :-) Hope this latest bit of damage soon fixes itself.
|
Where is the gravity switch? I assume its something on the hing or it a glass hammer?
Hopefully my knee will fix itself soon, I've always had knee trouble which seems to come back every few years.
|
Glass hammer's no good. You need a struggle bar to hold the door open.
I have one here if you want to borrow it but it's 25 ft long and you might struggle to get it home !
Best wishes for the knee...anyway, you've got another one, haven't you ?
If you feel up to coming round, I still have no sound...I'll ring later in week...got to get you earning !
Get an offcut of 3"X2" timber and wedge it in the hinge area while you get in...that's what I do if I need a door open while I work inside a car.
Sheemples !

The check link should have a number of notches in it so the door can be left open at different angles, these presumably wear over time (or just snap in the case of Omegas) and so don't hold the weight of the door so well.

your lucky your car is a 5 door, the 3 door catches you far more often
|
Thanks I will investigate it tomorrow, I will put a high rest photo of the hing up, people on here will probably spot the problem in seconds. I can't cope with 3 door cars anymore, owned two and they are just too tricky. When I bought this car one of the things I need was 5 doors.

Park the other side Ratts!!
|

|
Park on the other side of the road, or facing the other way, or somewhere flat.
|
Or just keep hold of the door handle as you get out?

The Corsa's cost him an arm and a leg.

Give the boy a break.........
"And if thy right leg offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell"
Don't bump your head as you get in or out!

Park in an inverted position.
|
First elbows, then knees... is there no end to Rattle's vulnerable joints?
The thing to do Rattle, right?, is to knee the car right in the computer before it has the chance to computer you right in the knee, get my drift?
Honestly these youngsters. Leave them alone for a minute and they get mugged by squirrels.

Watch out for your head on the top of the door frame, and in particular your left ear as you sit down. It's probably best to wear a helmet.

Park where it won't happen?
Reading this thread I can imagine how Capt Mainwaring felt about Pike!
|
now if I walk for more than quarter of a mile my knee starts playing up
As per the Dr's advice when the patient said it hurts if I put my arm in the air. "Well don't put it in the air then".
In other words, walk less than ¼ of a mile and it won't play up ;o)

Get yourself some motorcyclists' knee/leg armour. tinyurl.com/y9k8hhp
It won't stop the door hitting your legs but it will protect your knees/legs.
|
|
On a steep camber I always climb in through the boot to avoid this danger.
|
Keep right foot in the door.
Heel on sill, toe on door.
But women can multitask!

As above- get a pair of Hood or Draggin Jeans - they have knee posckets on the inside for armour.

rattle,,,
you mentioned about a broken elbow...
when i got knocked off a push bike and broken mine (keep fit is bad for you) was told not to drive for 6 weeks, by the doctor, it would mean no insurance payout as technically your not fit to drive...try bracing yourself against the steering wheel in an accident with a broken elbow..

Doctor said I am now fine to drive :). I have full use of my arm now its healed very quickly but it was only a very tiny fracture (but enough to be in agony at for the first two weeks). I didn't drive for the first five weeks for the reason you mentioned :).
I can drive perfectly now the main problem I have with my elbow now is it hurts a bit in the morning and if it gets knocked it can be little bit painful. I have been very lucky how quickly its healed.

In a Marlin?
|
Maybe using the sunroof as primary point of ingress and egress would work? slide down the bonnet?
|
Hope your leg and arm feel better soon Rattle. It`s no fun at all suffering pain and a degree of disability like that.
|
Knee feels better now but not actually stepepd out the house yet. It dosn't stop me from doing it anything its just a bit uncomfortable.
|
|
I have to admit that the Marlin is not my only or even usual means of transport, it's not very practical for a family. Originally it had no doors but getting in and around the steering wheel with the hood on was difficult even in my younger days so it now has a door on the driver's side. I've just been playing with a new petrol tank for it as it happens!
