Online only insurance and taxing your car... - b308
I nearly fell foul of a certain online only Car Insurance firm (they say they are quick by the name!) and their "print your certificate at home" instructions... so here's the story and a warning!

It was just after i bought that old Escort Auto in December... I insured it, printed off the certificate (as instructed by their email) and took it along to the local post office to tax it... When I got there they found that as it had been registered as a "disabled person's car" (ie nil tax) they couldn't tax it and I'd have to take it to the local DVLA office at Worcester to get it taxed... They very kindly checked all the stuff I'd given them (including the certificate) and said it was all ok...

So on the Monday I toddled off to Worcester, waited in the queue and then presented everything to the guy behind the counter... He gets hold of the certificate and says "where did you get this from", so being a good boy I replied that I'd printed it off my printer... "Can't accept it" he says... So I told him that the PO had checked it and said it was all ok, "No good, we only accept originals" says he...

At that point I asked to speak to his boss, and after giving my side again (PO said it was ok, and email from Insurance Co says its ok) she very kindly said that I could phone them up, they confirm that the car is indeed insured to the DVLA and I eventually got my tax disc...

Moral of the story... even if you use one of the online only companies make sure you ask them to post an original copy of the Certificate... Seems they have several a day of these, and only the fact that the PO had checked it beforehand presuaded them to allow me the phone call... normally they just send them packing... without the tax disc!

You have been warned!

Ah yes, but they say the home printed one is ok, but according to the DVLA its not!!

My excellent broker is authorised by the insurance companies they deal with (well all the ones I've been involved with) to issue cover notes and certificates direct. They print them off on a printer no better than our home one. I've never had one refused at a PO or the local DVLA office.

This includes doing a similar change of tax class on a Motability car we bought and taxed in Dec.

I think you were unlucky with an over-keen member of DVLA staff.

Maybe, MM... It makes you wonder what is defined as the "original" certificate... surely if I print it off at home that one is the "original" as no other has been printed prior to then! May try that one next!!

I happen to have a renewal reminder V11 before me.

"All documents must be originals; not photocopies, faxed copies or downloaded copies."

Now, IANAL, but can a downloaded certificate be a copy... a copy implies an original exists somewhere - which clearly it doesn't...

ABI welcomes move towards electronic delivery of motor insurance certificates

Action will be taken to allow consumers to receive their motor insurance certificates by email, Jim Fitzpatrick MP, Road Safety Minister, announced at the ABI’s Motor Conference this week. This was greeted as a success for the ABI, which has been calling for a change in the law so that customers can receive their motor insurance certificates electronically.

Justin Jacobs, the ABI’s Assistant Director of Property, Motor and Liability said: “This announcement will have significant benefits for motorists. Enabling the use of the latest technology will improve customer service and will bring insurance technology into line with other industries.

“The insurance industry will in the future be able to provide quicker, more convenient and more reliable delivery of these important documents to their customers. And the move will save the industry between £5-10m a year. Electronic delivery also has the benefit of being more environmentally friendly.”

And the date when this was reported? It was 16th November 2007 !

So far I've only been with two insurance companies. First was Budget, who provided a reasonable amount of paperwork. But Endsleigh send you a right load of stuff in the post, booklets, terms/conditions, everything you need and would ever want is in paper form which I think is quite good. I wouldn't trust any company who won't send at least the certificate in the post.

Had a similar problem with the compnay b308 mentions. Went to the post office with my print at home certificate and they refused to accept it as authentic. I said that I could ring them to verify that I had insurance but the post office would have none of it-they said they needed a 'genuine' certificate. Was ensure what to do when a friend pointed out to me that you could buy your tax over the phone or net (this was a few years ago when DVLA had just rolled it out). Always buy tax on the net now. Talking of insurance had my renewal quote came through yesterday, £240 more than I paid last year even though I've had no claims or convictions in the past year. I knew insurance premiums were increasing but not at this rate!

I presented a computer printed certificate to the DVLA office near Reading last February for my Mazda 6 which I had just purchased. I strongly suspect that my insurer is the same one as the OP's. I needed to tax the car there for the exact same reason as the OP, it had been on disabled class before. The retailer who sold me the car informed me of this so that I didn't waste a trip to a Post Office to find out. Well done Car Giant.

The Reading (Theale) DVLA office accepted the insurance certificate without question, didn't turn a hair.

I even mentioned that it was home computer printed once he had acecpted it and started to issue the tax disk, and the chap at the desk said it wasn't a problem when the insurer is an online only outfit. No worries.

I'm renewing SWMBO's insurance. The, erm prompt sounding, place she's currently with won't renew because she'll be retired but require business use.

I've found someone who will but they won't accept an e-mail version of renewal document and proof of NCB.

Let's see if I can get the, erm rapid sounding, company to post me what I need before I run out of synonyms.
