The boot light/tailgate open switch is part of the latch. It usually fills up with water from the rear washer tubing and rots the connector/wiring.Easy to replace and the part is not expensive.hth
I have exactly the same problem - thanks a lot! Do you know the part number of the switch, or is there a photo of it somewhere? I had a look in my Haynes manual and it this was all I could find:
"The luggage compartment light switch is integrated into the tailgate/boot lid lock mechanism, and cannot be renewed independently. If the luggage compartment light switch is faulty, renew the tailgate/boot lid lock mechanism..."
So can I just get the switch or do I need to replace the whole lock?
PS I found this guide on how to fix the likely source of the problem - uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/273229/1796785.aspx - hope this helps others.

...and if you don't fix it soon, the next thing will be the alarm going off at 2am, when it suddenly realises that it thinks the hatch is open.
(and if you 'plip' it from the bedroom window it well may silence it immediately, but remember that the cunning VW alarm rearms itself if you do not open a door within 30 secs - so just as you and the neighbours have got back to sleep, it'll go off again...)
