Can anyone help with the problem i have with my Passat .I get a vibration through the whole estate when accelerating up to 60 mph and then it smooths out .could it be a bent drive shaft or gearbox problem . I Feel it will damage other components if i leave it . The estate has covered over 100000k .I purchased it from a car auction with a good service record .Any thoughts anyone .Martink

Speaking generally, a road speed dependent vibration which shakes the whole vehicle without necessarily being felt through the steering is a worn inner driveshaft UJ.
I suspect on a W8 the torque loadings are such as to give these joints a very hard time.
I had this problem on my (pre-GM) SAAB, the cause being insufficient grease on initial assembly. Although the driver in the gearbox was worn in one groove, throwing the shaft out of centre and thus causing the shake, all of the running components were recoverable after a careful polish. There are 96 needle rollers in a SAAB inner joint... Superb quality parts.
A "new" (secondhand) driver reclaimed from the opposite side so as to present unworn running surfaces, together with the reworked bearings and spherical rollers provided a permanent cure. Don't use CV joint grease in needle roller inner joints.

Thanks for the info ,what is my next port of call to confirm same . Martink

Is it really a W8 or a 1.9TDI?
Another possibility is worn engine mounts, if these have gone a bit floppy then they will transmit vibration at low rpm and speeds.
|
A very good point - W8 and 1.9 don't tie up.
Was the W8 4WD?

The W8 was indeed 4WD. They probably have the 1.9PDI though.

Sorry for the confusion its the 1.9 tdi .Martink

Does it vibrate in EVERY gear when driving below 60mph? Does it vibrate if you're coasting in neutral? If it does, it's likely to be a driveshaft, or wheel hub / suspension-related problem.
If it only vibrates at a certain RPM or speed in a certain gear, it's probably an engine / gearbox problem.
Do you feel the vibration through the steering wheel / seat / pedals or is it just an intrusive booming noise?
Can you try and narrow it down?

Yes it vibrates through the gears more noticeable at about 2000 revs in each of the gears , but no vibration felt through the steering or pedals just a tightness through the car hard to describe . Martink ps no vibration when out of gear that probably cuts out driveshafts although i am not to sure what the heck it can be .

Inner UJ wear usually shows as a strong vibration/shake through the whole vehicle when torque is applied. Worn joints force the driveshaft off centre by the applied torque and cause the shake.
My SAAB had a very slight pull to the right on heavy acceleration, so I deduced (correctly as it happened) that the RH joint had a problem - my theory being that a defective joint would present more friction and cause drag on that side. On opening the joint up, there was practically no grease in it and one of the three "raceways" in the inner driver had a deep groove worn into it on the driving face where the roller had been skidding.
There was practically no statically detectable shake in the joint - I put a DTI on the shaft and shook it before dismantling.

Thanks for your input .i shall reluctantly have to get some help from a vw garage which sends cold shivers down my back after experiencing the the bills received from servicing my vw golf over the past few years . Martink
