How to remove new car transport wax. - M.M
New car was delivered yesterday and the dealer hasn't made a perfect job of removing all the protective wax. They did offer to get it done locally but I said it was probably easier to do myself so they're sending a litre of "tar and glue remover". Does this sound the right stuff and is it rubbed on neat or added to a wash?

Is there anything else less fierce that would do the job?

New car delivered on 31st Dec, registered as of 1st Jan I guess?

Not sure about the stuff they mention though it sounds like it will need a polish after that is used, might be best to see it something like silicon lube sprayed on a soft cloth with remove the wax.

I wouldnt touch it. If you damage the paintwork (or its damaged elsewhere) you dont have a leg to stand on warranty wise.

Get the dealer to do it. And tell him plainly that as the PDI has clearly been hit and miss, they can do the whole PDI inspection again.

Registered 30th Dec.

Know what you mean about chucking it back to the dealer AE. I'd have jumped all over them when I was young and thrusting.... I'm mostly chilled these days and can't be bothered for the sake of 15mins going round it myself assuming I have the correct chemical. In truth I will probably take more care than the guy who did it in the first place!

I hear brake fluid and a stiff brillo works wonders....that's my Top Gear to tip....!!

On second thoughts....

I'm with Altea on this one. If a regular wash doesn't sort it, let the dealer do it for you in case you rub too hard. They supplied yu with a new car -- it should be in A1 road going condition.

Yup, I agree with RF.

Why 30th Dec, why not have it 2010 registered MM?

BTW, what car is it?

How do you know they've made a 'perfect' job of the rest of the PDI then? I'd be suspicious of the whole process - as AE suggests. If they can't be bothered to quality check the obvious & visible - what about the important & less visible oily bits...

No dealer knows how to detail a car, it's a fact!

Almost all dealers know how to.

Almost all dealers know to do so properly would make them uneconomic.

I'm not worried about the year, the "deal" was on a 2009 car. It's a C5 Tourer which I'd intended to report on after a few days.

I will only try a gentle rub with the chemical they supply. If that doesn't do it they will be paying for a local place to do it for me (supplying dealer is 120mls away).

You have to take any PDI on trust don't you. Even an apparently perfect dealer could just get it immaculate, stamp the book and never look at the oily bits.

I've done fluid checks, checked the wheels are tight, tyres to pressure, looked for the spare... (ahh it hasn't got one but found the tools etc), operated all the basic eqpt and driven it 100mls so that's near enough.

Can i ask M.M how much discount did you get?
I am having great difficulty getting my local dealer to drop much in price and will have to resort to a broker to get the price down.
Also what model is it?
Sorry for being nosey but i am very interested in your thoughts on the C5,so please keep us updated with your review.
Thanks.

And pay the extra 2.5% VAT - how stupid would that be?

I would use white spirit for removal of the wax.

As far as discounts are concerned i would use DrivetheDeal.com.

I have bought a few vehicles from them.

All main dealer supplied UK cars . You as first keeper etc etc.

In my experience an excellent company to deal with and for the vehicles i bought by far the best discount.

Yes, use tar and glue remover BUT for heavens sake, get them to do it, you have paid for the service, so demand it. You will need to polish the car afterwards and I can assure you, 15 minutes is optimistic, not to mention leaving yourself open to any damage.

Yep probably right... I've had contact this afternoon from someone helpful involved who's said leave it we'll sort the problem properly next week.

I'll do a seperate post soon about the car/deal.

It's not all that unusual to find the odd bit of wax residue left, and it should come off easily with Autoglym SRP. If you use neat solvents, you'll have to rewax anyway. I don't think I would bother take it back unless there's a serious amount of work needed, but opinions will obviously differ on this!

Get them to pay someone local to you to do it;our local valeting business offers that service.
How to remove new car transport wax. - M.M
That's what they've said will be done... local valet or maybe local dealer to do and re-charge supplying dealer.
How to remove new car transport wax. - M.M
Just to round this off.. taken time due to a busy few weeks and the weather has given little incentive.

The contact hire supplier Ling Cars insisted I shouldn't have to do this myself and immediately sent a cheque for the cost of a valet at the local Citroen agents. Managed to find time to leave it there yesterday and they removed the surplus wax then polished it. Now realise the suppling dealer hadn't polished it in the first place as it really looks a treat now with the rain standing in beads after a shower yesterday.

I still have the supposed tar and glue remover the supplying dealer sent me in the post in a pop bottle... I wouldn't have used it because a spirt smelling clear liquid with no usage instructions could have been anything.

My Zafira had overspray from the rustproofing wax used under the car on lower parts of front of bumper when new. I used Autoglym Super Resin polish to clean the paint and their Bumper Care on the rubber spoiler and plastic grille. Came up a treat.

glue remover". Does this sound the right stuff and is it rubbed on neat or

Is this actually how dealers de-wax new cars ??
How to remove new car transport wax. - M.M
I wondered this too.

From the first ineffective clean on mine it looks like the removal was done with a jetwash as the bits missed were on the roof and bonnet where styling flutes might have stopped the full water pressure hitting the car.

I assumed the remover solvent was sprayed on all over first to soften or injected into the flow of the pressure washer.
How to remove new car transport wax. - Bill Payer
stopped the full water pressure hitting the car.

Makes you laugh when people, as in another recent thread on here, are horrified about using a pressure washer to clean their car!

All those new cars on transporters charging up and down the motorways from Vauxhall, Nissan, Toyota, Honda etc seem to have nothing more than white clingfilm on the upper panels and rubber / plastic protectors on the doors and wheel trims. I doubt if many new cars really have "transport wax" sprayed on them these days.
How to remove new car transport wax. - M.M
It would be interesting to hear from someone involved exactly what the position is on the wax. I've read that the French are still using it and that it would be "hard wax" not the old soft wax. That fits with how it looked. I've also heard that cars are de-waxed in bulk on arrival in the UK.

Regarding the pressure washer I'm happy with an initial use on a clean new car where valeters are 100% liable for any damage. I don't like them for grit blasting a dirty car where I'd be picking up the tab for any problems.
