Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 96 1.6 Screeching noise when starting engine

96 1.6 Screeching noise when starting engine - Focus_Driver
My megane makes a screeching noise when I turn on the engine but not during normal driving. I've heard this noise before on other cars. Is it the fanbelt thats making this noise?

It is yes, strictly speaking its not called the fan belt any more, as i does not drive the fan. Its commonly known as the alternator belt.

On renaults if this snaps and flies off, it can take your cam belt with it and wreck the engine.

Maybe it just wants adjusting to take up the slack in the belt (if it hasn't got a self adjuster). No idea how Renault do it, but with other cars I've worked on you slacken a bolt on the alternator, move it along a bracket that has a slot cut in it and tighten back up.

Dave, I wouldn't know how to do that so I will just get it replaced as its an old car and it will need changing anyway.
