Compressor installation advice sought - Gregory II
Hi

I want to buy a compressor, but my shed is some 30 metres away from my house. The purpose of the compressor is to use it for spray painting jobs, servicing my vehicle etc. What would I need to buy to safely connect it within the shed, ie fuse boxes etc. Also where can I buy these items at a reasonable price and how could I wire it into the house?

I have thought of screw fix, but does anyone else have other suggestions whetre I can purchase these items around the Brighton and Hove/ East Sussex area to do a nice long term job. Also are there are any precautions I might be advised to take before I attempt this.

Thanks
Greg

Mine is a sip 150ltr tank 3hp motor works from a 13 amp fuse any bigger will have to hard wired or 3 phase which at home i doubt you have.

You can put them on wheels to move about,is this staying in the shed perminent?

If it is consult an electrican for safety advise bit hard to say with no pictures etc.

150ltrs will spray and use air gun ok.

It sounds like you need to run a buried armoured 30 amp cable from an RDC Isolator then an RDC Distribution board in the Shed. for Lights, power and the compressor socket. As far as the compressor use I use a large propane bottle up in the rafters as a secondary water seperator and a second pressure regulator. What do you do for heating in the shed, Gas heaters ? Where can I purchase a 30 amp armoured cable from an RDC isolator at a reasonable price. Is this something that might be purchased from Screwfix?
Thanks

Screwfix, CEF, other electrical suppliers. Remember you will need a caerified electricaion to give you a compliance certificate. Regards Peter

Unfortunately iirc the armoured cable tends to be sold in 25m lengths or 100m reels so not ideal lengths for your purpose. The armoured doesn't need specialist tools to install.

Before you buy the compressor the unipart group of companies (think brown brothers ) are now doing a single phase 3hp 200 litre tank which would be better for the work you will be doing as sometimes my 150 litre tank empties quicker than it can be filled.
Personally i dont see whats wrong with ring main cable in protective sleeving and having its own spur off the main fuse box
but im not an electrician............

rated at max 46 amps. 50 m reel £121
You need the rating to avoid significant voltage drop when the compressor starts and when running. That will run you compressor, ligths, extractor fans, etc etc. and even a SIP welder, not at the same time though. Regards Peter

I have searched for the brown brothers group but I cannot find them. Would a compressor from machine mart or screwfix not suffice?

scroll down
machine mart are ok but you might struggle to get spares as they change specs a lot
screwfix im not sure i would buy a compressor there i would use them more for throwaway consumables but stand to be corrected
www.thorite.co.uk/ in yorkshire are a respected company too in air products and they will deliver
