Recently got a 1.4 TSI SE. Have noticed a rather annoying booming/reverberating/droning noise from the rear when travelling at anything over about 40 mph. Not sure what it is exactly, Sounds are always difficult to describe. Had a saloon car before and wondered if hatchbacks are just noisier. Even so the noise is noticeable and could be irritating on a long journey.
Layed a thick blanket in the boot but no noticeable difference when testing on a drive.
Sound is slightly similar to having a roofrack rail. It's not engine as dropping the clutch the noise is still there.
Called the garage and they said it could be the bearings! Could they fail so soon? Only done 150 miles!
Just wondering if anyone else has noticed a booming noise.
Shame as the car is very well built and quiet otherwise.Hope this isn't going to be the minus point of the car.

nows the time to try your jack out!
jack the rear wheel(s) up , engine in gear , handbrake off , and try to spin the back wheels , and also check for up/down , for/aft play , could be a loose or a tight bearing

Does the Mk6 have a cover on the underside at the rear? Mk5 had one at the front. They're a pig to get back on when undone, which is why you see so many VW-group machines roaming around with covers hanging down. It does make a sort of rumbling groaning noise when not fastened properly, as fast-moving air is funnelled in.
Agree with freddy, jack time-

You can never rule out faulty parts even on a new car. Would like to think the dealer would have picked it up on the PDI though.

You'd have thought. But I had a 1.8T Passat new in 2000 and it sounded like a jet taking off even at low speed (it was the turbo). I also had a Golf 1.8T in 1999 and the gearbox made a grating noise from new.
Both problems fixed though - new gearbox for the Golf and new turbo for the Passat. The latter also had a new gearbox because they insisted it was gearbox and not turbo.... so two cars in 9 months and both got new gearboxes - dealer must have made some money :-)
So VW PDI checks at that garage (the same one for both cars for me) not that good.

Could be vibration which would explain why you hear it over 40.
If it is really irritating and is a brand new car, you should take it back to the garage. Don't put up with it, after all you have just parted with a lot of money for something that should be fit for the purpose.
Wish I could have bought a new car!!

Went out again today. Can actually hear it at 20 mph which kind of rules out wind noise over something.
I know the car is generally very quiet but this, to me, just isn't right.
Going to the garage on Tuesday.

The PDI may have missed a bit of "transit packing" which is rubbing on a wheel or brake.

Been to the dealer today and, as expected, they could not hear anything. Bit peeved really as I wouldn't have driven 25 miles for the sake of it. The 1.4 TSI demonstrator was unavailable but I did go out in a 3dr 1.4 S. No noise detectable.
Not sure what to do now. Maybe write to VW UK technical Dept. The garage said they could have it for a day and compare it with another one but unless someone is with me and actually hears the noise there's little point.
They said they checked the bearings and had a good look underneath.
So if anyone can check for a strange droning/booming noise from the rear at anything from 15mph upwards then I'd be pleased to know. The salesman said it was tyre noise but I dispute that as the nosie stays the same when the road surface changes. The actual tyre noise changes though on different surfaces.
Rather taken the edge of what I thought was going to be a superb car.

I wonder if you'll have a similar experience that I had back in 2000/2001 with a Passat. I had wind noise around the driver side window.
Went back to supplying dealer (had already had a new turbo and gearbox, although the gearbox was not needed) and they tried many times to fix the problem. I even went out on test drives with someone sat behind me.
Eventually they said - we can't hear any wind noise.... so how were they adjusting the door to stop it on multiple occasions and getting paid for it.
Went to another dealer and someone test drove it with me and heard it straight away. And came up with a plan to eliminate the noise. So booked it in.
Two trips later it's still there and I kick up a little fuss - even refer to the VW ad about squeaking earrings. VW UK say nothing more can be done. I then ask has "Chris" done what was suggested. Turned out the guy with a plan was not involved now...
.. He then was. And fixed the problem in a few hours. Using his "plan". A small hole in the wing mirror housing was the problem all along. Hundreds of pounds of VW dealers time later I was happy.
Until the airbag problem....
I still like VAG cars :-) Now the Golf GTI 1.8T I had made a slightly embarrassing noise at time - new gearbox fixed that one.

Have you checked the boot area (spare wheel etc) for anything that might be vibrating/resonating? I have a similar Golf, but never really noticed any untoward noises from the rear (apart from stuff rolling around in the boot of course!)
Also, is there anything loose in/around the rear lights? I seem to have a dead wasp inside one of the light clusters - not sure how that got there...
|
I've got a dead wasp in my high level brakelight, been there for years. A bit like one of those amber rings with a fly in it I like to think. Dunno if it's anything to do with the spider who has lived in my door mirror for a similar period. They are both very quiet though.

I used to have a Scenic and switched to a SEAT Altea XL in summer 07. Even on the test drive car, I was conscious that the road noise was louder than the Scenic. The new car was also the same.
Nothing specific to put my finger on, just seemed a mixture of tyre road noise and poor sound proofing. If its any consolation, I have got used to it and wouldn't notice it now.

I reckon I have the same problem as Neilly. We have a new Golf 1.6 and it makes a noise like the exhaust has partly blown, very annoying and even makes heads turn when accelerating gently! I have taken it to the VW dealer who say that there are no other complaints and that another 1.6 they have sounds the same. However, the mechanic said that he thought there was a problem with the exhaust and they have had 1.4 and 1.6 comments from other owners. Like you I am not sure what to do next!
|
The Service Manager called me today asking me to bring the car in so that he could have a listen.
He seemed genuinely interested on the problem which imspired some confidence.
The noise is difficult to explain but I did not hear it on the 1.4 S I went out in yesterday. I have the 1.4 TSI.
|
Like you I am not sure what to do next!
I would start by asking to drive that other 1.6 they have and make your own judgement.
Or try another dealer.
|
Went back to the garage last week but service manager could not hear the noise.
Also tried a1.4 TSI 5 DR - could not hear the noise.
I'm wondering if it could be tyres.
Neither car I tried had Michelin Energy tyres fitted.
Perhaps they are noisy tyres.
|
As a test, change the tyre pressures - either pump them right up to the max load, or down to 20psi (for a short time, short distance in the dry if poss) as that may change the noise and help pinpoint.
