What do people actually pay for new cars? - harrogate big vern
I'm after a Mazda 6 2.2D 163bhp TS.

In searching around the net I'm surprised that there appears to be little discussion of what people actually manage to get cars for!

Does anyone know sites where people share what they have actually managed to pay for new or nearly new cars?

If anyone has any advice on buying the mazda I'm interested in I would be very grateful.

I haven't bought a Mazda 6 recently but a well known car magazine is quoting £17,868 compared to the list price of £19,510 as the maximum you should be paying for it.
Hope that helps.

Never let the dealer know how much you have to spend.
Always ask for extras (I got roof bars, flaps, mats, first aid kit headlamp protectors, £3000 off first offer) you can have them for nothing. Be prepared to walk away.

That is indeed one way of doing it. Alternatively and contrarily I tend to use the completely opposite strategy when buying a car. I identify the make, model, colour, spec etc I want. I approach the dealer and give them that brief and tell them that I am willing to here and now write a cheque for a given amount if they will do the deal today. The usual and highly predictable response is a sucking of teeth and pretend visits to sales managers etc but the result has on a number of occasions been the same. Either they, apparently reluctantly, agree there and then or you get a phone call the following day offering to do the deal if you have had to walk.

Sometimes transparency works. I find if you remain calm, firm, but very polite and ensure that it is understood that you are serious you can get some very good deals this way.

I am with Humph on this one. The last few cars I have bought have all been via phone, not to brokers but to dealers.

I find if you do your homework, and make it obvious you have ie. a want this spec as it has the cruise control, garage x is offering them as you have seen in today's paper, I need to change by x-date etc then you get a lot better, informed response from them.

Sales folk must have so many time wasters to deal with that you can understand that when a genuine buyer comes along they may not initially be treated that way.

Drive the Deal site will give you a good idea of the price that you should be expecting to pay.
