Don't know if anybody had noticed this but I saw on a German website yesterday that VW are offering the Golf in Germany with the 1.8 engine out of the Passat. This is the 160 hp version. This is specifically (it says) due to the fact that they can't make enough of the 1.4s to meet demand. Apparently, this 1.8 engine will cease to be offered once the 1.4 supply problem has been solved.
Also, because the 1.8 is slightly less economical, they're offering a 600 Euro discount on it as compensation.
This might be of interest to those on here who've posted about waiting for their 1.4s. I wonder if they'll offer the 1.8 here?

This type of new petrol engine technology is so far ahead of the older type of technology it no wonder people are queuing up to buy them. On the VW wet site they are quoting : Unfortunately due to high demand for the 1.4 TSI 122 engine, there is currently a delay on factory production of this engine of 6 to 7 months. However, some cars are available from stock so please contact your local retailer for more details.
It sounds like VW may be offering a workaround to the high demand, the 1.8 TSI engine offering 160 ps would suffice as an alternative to either the 1.4 TSI 122 & 160 engines which in turn may help reduce some of the factory production pressure from the 1.4 TSI engine, it would be an interesting alternative to consider.
Vauxhall will be rolling out a similar 1.4 turbo engine, more efficient, more power & torque, lower emmisions than their current 1.4 & 1.6 engines. However, due to expected high demand they also plan to continue to offer a 1.4 and 1.6 normal aspirated petrol engines for 2 or 3 years to allow production be able to meet demand. Also the normal aspirated engines cost less to produce to they'll form the base line models until rising production capacity for direct injection turbo engines replaces them some time in the future.

I for one dont believe its just a demand thing. WHy?
1. Hardly any being/been delivered in the UK and dealers being told that only a handful can be ordered.
2. They have had well over a year to gear up production.
3. They had similar problems/story with the FSi engines a couple of years ago. You still dont see thousands of those. Remember head failures?
4. Plenty of availabilty of other engines
5. Either a supplier is having difficulty making or supplying parts or there is a question mark over certain components - I bet its the direct injection stuff.

Do I recall there was a demand problem for the 1.8/1.8T engine about 10 years ago and not long after the 1.8 20V Golf GTi got the old 2.0 8V engine. The 1.8T kept the engine.
I also notice in Audis, the detuned 2.0T (180PS) has lower emissions than the 1.8T.

Renault were producing 1.4 turbo engines in the late 80's in the form of the Renault 5 Turbo.
Quite a pocket rocket I believe with an engine that produced 160 hp or there abouts, but I suspect these new engines will be quite a bot more reliable.
I once had a second hand Renault 5 Gordini and can remember replacing a head gasket and was shocked to find that a new gasket alone cost £80 or so back then.

Starngely enough someone I know was quoted £75.00 for a VW engine rocker cover/gasket the other day.
