98 1.7 white smoke from exhaust - diddydiner
hi
i have recently been getting a lot of white smoke from the exhaust on start up and pulling away.
if i rev the car up stationary it also blows out smoke, in which it never done before.
its only been the last two weeks this has been happening.
i only usually potter around local on very short trips but the other day i drove about a mile and thought there was a fine smoke comming from under the bonnet???
ive noticed a grey sludge around the neck of the water tank
any ideas cheers

Head gasket gone you need the hydrocarbons sniffed to see if it has gone, does it use water?

You also may have condensation from you short trips but you need to confirm before it gets serious.

Head gasket.
Check if its using water. Also look under the oil filer cap for mayonnaise.
If it is the head gasket you will be looking at £300+ for garage to replace depending on what engine you have.
Are you sure its a 1.7? Not a 1.6 or 1.8!

Only Escort engines at this time were 1.6/1.8 petrol or 1.8(1753cc.) diesel. 1.7 only in PUMA.

Hi
Yes, how do i get the Hyrocarbons sniffed???
No its not loosing water and the tempreture is fine (no high reading on that), and theres no sludge in the oil, but ive just checked the dip stick and theres prob too much oil. it reads well over the mark.

Best take it to a garage ask them to do it or you could buy the kit but for a one off job it's cheaper to take it in.

If there is far too much drop the oil and change the filter then run it or take it for a good drive to burn off the excess oil, it can do damage to engines and blow out oil seals.
