2000 X Scenic RXE 1.9 DCi
Hi folks, parked up on the drive on Friday night as normal, went out Sat morn to go to work, fired up trusty Scenic and it scared me to death!! The noise coming from the engine was truly horrible, sounds like someone has poured a bag of nails in the top. Normally it purrs gently even from cold, now it sounds like a really old transit van. What I'm confused about is that it was perfect the night before and immediately horrible the next day. I have driven it and it drives as normal, no missing or poor performance, just a really loud clattering. Has anyone got any ideas please??

It could be your dephaser pulley
strangely im dong a thesis on this and didnt even realise the diesel had it fitted

OK, but what the hell is a dephaser pulley!!!! and where is it?? Why would it be causing that noise??

I have read that the dephaser pulley is to do with variable valve timing on vvt petrol engines, not sure it would be the cause of my problem. I'll keep looking for an answer!

well i didnt think they were fitted to your engine either but i read they are so im as unsure as you
ive heard the noise first hand on a petrol and its just like really noisy tappets
