Virus advice please - P.Mason {P}
Not motoring related, but as there are some clued-up computer users in the backroom, could they please help.
I received an email this morning warning of a virus that may have been passed via an address book. It is named jdbgmgr.exe and has a teddybear icon.
I searched and indeed there it was in the Windows directory. However, it was also detected in an old, saved directory from the time that I had to reinstall the system. This makes me think it may be a bona fide part of the Windows operating system.
Can anyone advise whether it is a genuine virus or a hoax?
Many thanks in anticipation.
Peter.

I've just searched for the file on my work PC (Windows 2000, virus scanner updatet every Monday and every file checked weekly). This file does appear, with a teddy bear icon (which muppet though that one up?)

My file size if 15,120 bytes. Check this and see if it matches. If it does, I THINK you are OK, but don't take my word for it :)

Forgot to add,

Its a debugger app for Java - I guess deleting it MIGHT screw up your Internet Explorer (Perhaps what the author of the warning email wants you to do)

This is indeed a hoax, albeit a rather old one now. See securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/j...l and well done for doing some investigation before deleting the file. I know many people who were caught by this one.

PM. I had this and oddly enough, although it is in your computer it is not actually harmful I believe! Type the full file title into the Google search engine and I think you will be reassured. It is there but not harmful E&OE!

These hoaxes have been well publicised.

If you type in "virus hoax alert thread" in the "site search" box, you will find plenty of advice on what to do to prevent being conned as well as being affected by real viruses.

IIRC Martyn(moderator) has said in the past that you should first try google.co.uk or zdnet.co.uk (or similar engines) for information on these topics.

Many thanks for the reassuring info. I have noted the web sites for checking in future.

One of the better websites for checking out hoaxes :
hoaxbusters.ciac.org/

You can search this one for virus hoaxes and for other internet hoaxes (please send money to save dying girl type).

I always use www.nai.com (Norton Anti Virus). They have a complete library of all viruses (virii?) and also steps on how to get rid of them.

I use Norton but some of these saddos who write and distribute vruses/virii are now writing them to attack your antivirus software. Nortoan are v good IMHO but I have mine set to check for updates whenever I am on line; I get updates about 3 times a week so they are trying to keep ahead of the game. I think that they had some problem a few eeks ago where they had to shut down, and stop updates, as their own main site was attacked and corrupted!
