Renault Laguna (1994 - 2001) - 98 2.0 Constant ticking sound from engine

98 2.0 Constant ticking sound from engine - steve245
I bought a renault laguna a couple of days ago, and as i started it up and pulled away yesterday morning there was a constant ticking sound coming from the engine. It hasn't affected the power or performance of the car at the moment was wondering if theres anyone who can give me a rough idea of what the problem could be. Thanks

Is this petrol or diesel?

Check aux belts and pulleys, hydraulic tappets, more info required if you want help please.

You could try adding hydraulic tappet cleaner to the oil. I had this problem and a year later it started sounding like an old transit van diesel. Turned out to be the de-phaser pulley (fitted to 16 valve engines). The de-phaser alters the cam timing; too advanced makes the engine run rough, too retarded makes it sound like a box of spanners.
