04 DCi Problem starting and engine hunting - fedup100
I have a 2004 DCi Sport X Trail which has had so many problems I can not mention them all! The latest is that the car will not start in the morning and when it does the engine is hunting, this happens every time the engine is idle, so at traffic lights it will rev for no reason. Taken to Nissan dealer and they do not know what the problem is!! Any ideas ?

Don't have an answer but had a 2.7L. Nissan Terrano 2 diesel which developed a similar characteristic at tickover.
I wouldn't call it hunting, it was more like the diesel engines on very old buses at tickover, a sort of "vroom, vroom" pattern. I'm told this was referred to as hysteresis.
As it did not cause a lot of problems I left it until I traded the car in, hence no diagnosis.

I would have the suction control valve checked out, this fits on to the back of the fuel pump, if you had no luck at the nissan dealer, try another 1 its down to the technician who worked on the car to realise the problem you have, Nissan have a technical bulletin on this.

Dear X-Trail owner,

I have exactly the problem you have described and I too have taken it to a Nissan dealer to no avail; i have been told it is not glo plugs and is not a fuel problem.

Did you get it solved? If so, please help!

Thanks
