99 1.25 Stalling when cold - sladey
Hi, When I set off first thing in the morning, when I get to a junction etc and put the clutch down it sometimes just dies batt light comes on etc and I have to restart. Sometimes the revs will recover at about 450 and bounce back up but mostly the car will just die. Once the engine is warm its absolutly fine, any ideas?

Thanks

My 94 Escort used to have a similar problem (caused perhaps, although I am not 100% sure, by a dirty idle control valve, a service item often ignored).

There was a sure way to prevent it from stalling though: to allow at least a second or so of overrun - with foot off the throttle and the engine being turned by the car's forward motion - before declutching and putting the car in neutral at the junction. If one declutched and came off the accelerator immediately with the car still accelerating, the engine would often stall in the way you describe.

This is just a driving technique to prevent the engine from stalling, and it may not work with your car. And it means having to remember something extra during traffic driving, although after a while it becomes habitual. Best really to address what Number_Cruncher calls the 'root cause'.

Thanks for the reply, I have actually fitted a brand new icv in the last week, also cleaned the butterfly inside the throttle body.

At the moment I have started to come off the accelerator and brake slightly before going on the clutch which prevents any stall every time and like you say it has actually become a habit but its not ideal and im curious to cure it really

Can anyone shed any light on this issue, its driving me nuts now. Ive got a new icv, a new tps and loom cleaned inside throttle body. Im lost as to what is causing this stalling when cold.

One thing I noticed last night is that if I rev the car by hand at the throttle body, as I pull it with my finger I can hear like a hiss of air, is this normal as obviously i cant hear that when driving.

Please help

Thanks
