Does the emission analyser need to be programmed with the model of the vehicle in order to create a valid result?
Must the emissions test also know the engine speed? Does the oil temperature need to be measured as well?
Thanks

With respect to tests on a recent catalysed petrol car:
1 I believe so, certainly for cat equipped vehicles
2 Speed ranges are specified for the various tests and these are shown on the test results sheet, but I've had MOT passes where this has not been measured. The results sheet said 'speed measurement bypassed'.
3 There is a minimum specified oil temperature for the tests.

John, regarding item 3:
Before taking my BMW for a test in June at a garage about 1/4 mile away, I ran it along some country roads to get the oil warmed up because last year it wasn't up to the minimum temperature for the test (80 degrees Celsius?).
When I mentioned this to the tester, he told me that there had recently been some changes and the oil temperature was no longer monitored and it didn't need to be at working temperature for the test. I don't know if the changes were in the testing equipment or in the regulations (he did tell me but I've forgotten - Age is starting to have its effect ... started about 50 years ago in fact!).

Dizzy is correct. I too asked about this when I MoTed my machine just a few weeks ago. The tester said they just check the temp guage now and do the "standard" test. If the car does not pass this then they do the specific test which includes the oil temp check. He reckoned that provided the car is in good order and you've driven about five miles you should pass the test.
Also noticed that the tester reved the motor for about 30 seconds to "clear its throat" just like in days of yore when cars had carbs (remember them?). Good to see some things don't change.

That is right, I have found it on another website about MOT emissions regulations, it seems that the emissions test has got simpler. I thought that for a car to reach Euro III emissions, many factors had to be checks, NOx HCx O2, etc
But it seems that the test has in fact got easier.

the test hasn't got easier - the emissions criteria are still the same, it's just the test method that has changed. If a car is knackered the standard test will show it up.

I think it's a two stage test now -
the first is simple but more stringent - pass it and thats it.
Fail and they revert to the longer old test.

OK guys, the MOT I mentioned was January this year, so things seem to have changed since then. Like Dizzy I ran the car for a while to get it warmed up - perhaps I won't worry next time.
I like the idea of the two stage check, much simpler and fairer. I'm assuming that it's rather all or nothing with cat equipped cars - these will tend to work or not.

They would have to plug into my obd to find the oil temp and they have never done that yet ! How many cars today display the temp?
