97 1.6 low constant noise at the front, dif? - une
Hi there,

i would like to hear an opinion different to what i have heard in the garage today as i got realy upset, my megane, end of 97yrs, has been threatened with a 900gbp bill.
the car drives perfect and i absolutelly loving it, however this horrible noise appeared at the front , considered wheel bearing, have replaced one as per advise at garage. however noise didnt disappear, guys at the garage blamed faulty bearing and replaced it again under warranty, it obviosly didnt help. today i was told it is DIF which is making the noise and they have to take apart gear box, etc, rebuild everything which may increase total costs to 900gbp. i am not prepared to spend that much money on such an old car (just under 80000miles). two points, shall i drive until it dies and if its safe or shall i look for second oppinion. has anybody had simmilar problem?
many many thanks!!
(apologise if there are many mistakes, english is not my first language)

probably the diff
can you lift the driveshafts up and down
whats it like in 5th gear
why not source a recon box plus fitting it should be cheaper than letting the garage strip it,
its what i used to do if i was in a corner and needed a quick result
be aware you need to use a gearbox man long established mind,as theres lots and losts of cowboy gearbox men out there ready to rip you

thanks! i dont think it is anything to do with the gear box, all gears works perfect, noise doesnt get affected by changing gears, although gets louder as faster i go, noise remains when out of gear as well, gear stick doesnt vibrate, however i can feel a tiny bit of vibration under the bottom of the car at the passengers side. im not sure about driveshafts will check though.... cheers

The gearbox and the diff. are one and the same thing (same housing, oil etc) and you can't take one apart without taking apart the other.

btw as told in the garage sorting the recon box would save me 120 pounds.. still doesnt make it a great deal :(

Unpalatable as it might seem, when a car gets to this age/value and something major goes, the only cost effective repair is usually using secondhand parts and DIY (or mate rate) labour. As soon as you add professional labour rates or new/recon parts, it outstrips the value of the car.

If you can't do this, its time to consider the car's future in your hands.

Others may disagree, but this is my view after running cheaper cars for years.

thanks everybody!
i have decided i am not going to spend any money on this, the car is not worth.
my main concern is am i save to drive until it dies, or what can possibly happen? i am going on the motorway every day, i would like to use it until i sort out something else. thanks

Looking on the bright side, a noisy diff could carry on being noisy for tens of thousands of miles, while performing adequately in all other respects.

I would carry on using it, but think seriously about replacing the car.
