I would read the reports on pistonheads from V8mate before travelling - it seems that current auction prices are higher than some retail prices.

I'm not sure how much of this is down to the reported mass purchases by ? rich Irish buyers.

lots of information on the BCA website which will cover your questions:

www.british-car-auctions.co.uk

And - at the top of this page - click Used Cars to read HJ's advice on buying at Auction.

And - you need to do some research on (retail and private sale) prices to ensure you don't pay over the top. Go a couple of times before you start bidding to ensure you don't buy the "dog" that's been through the ring several times before - one that the traders know has some hidden problems.

The auctioneer will read out the S/H.

It's all over very quickly - less than a minute maybe - , and you have to think clearly and act quickly and you are up against buyers who do this for a living every week.

so be careful

A lot of what's going through the block at BCA Bedford, and from V8mate's posts in PH show that hammer prices at auction are more than you'd pay if you had a decent search of Autotrader.

I'm also learning more into the current price increases being a bull trap rather than a permanent shift.

Perhaps there would be more used motors available if dealers stopped treating every potential trade in customer as he they had bought a dying leper to their premises. Is there ANYTHING they do want to take in and offer a reasonable price for. ?

Mr X - why not complain to the police. They might help you to force the trader to buy something from you that he doesn't want.

It's a strange world isn't it. Traders want us to buy something off them for top wack, use it sparingly, keep it pristine then hand it back for a pittance so that they can load it up and sell it on again ...........

And don't forget to add the hefty BCA commission.

Interesting that V8Mate on Pistonheads has been warned off making any more auction summary posts with photographs. Apparently the local auction house were OK with it but their HQ told them to put a stop to it after complaints from traders that he was giving away "trade" info.

I think the best thing you can do is visit BCA but not buy anything. Get a feel of the place, i think you'll find it confusing on your first visit, it's not for the inexperienced. i've been to a few but never felt comfortable enough to make a bid.
