Since no-one else has replied - I run a Golf GT TDi, so same engine (PD). Bought at 50k miles, now on 80k. This engine is described by some as 'noisy and gruff', yes you can hear it when the music's off, but can't say I regard it as such. No problems whatsoever with mine. Punchy and frugal, superb motorway cruiser or B roader. I'd have another tomorrow.

I have a 56 plate Passat 2.0 SE 140 which i generally like. Bought new in Sept 2006.

However, regulars here may remember that I have had to have 2 (yes, 2) new engines fitted, one after 9k miles and another after a further 14k. Both warranty jobs and superbly dealt with by my local dealer. Current engine has done almost 6k miles, but I wonder how long it will last! Only 6 months of warranty left.

Not trying to put you off - as the dealer says I've been very unlucky. Odds are probably like winning the lottery but without the payout.

hi Pat L, did they tell you what caused this fault.

First one due to oil pump failure, second one due to failure of a bolt in the cambelt tensioner.

Luckily both within 15 miles of home so fairly easy recovery etc.

A shame really because I think the 2.0TDi is a good engine.

My colleage has an 05 Audi A3 2.0TDI which would have been a really good car if it weren't for the engine. 2 head gasket failures in 70,000 miles and it's showing symptoms of a third. Apparently his friendly mechanic sees quite a few of them, and puts it down to the overbore from the 1.9 engine it's based on leaving too little "meat" on the gasket in several places.

Also VAG aren't remotely interested in what happens to their cars from the day the warranty expires. I've known so many people with 'just out of warranty' faults on VWs and Audis told to go away that I consider this attitude endemic to the company.

That said, there are various versions of the 2.0 engine, and the problems may not affect all. I personally think it's a shame they took an essentially bombproof and already gutsy engine (the 1.9 130PS TDI) and ruined it.

Cheers
DP

I would agree - totally. The move to 2 litres from 1.9 and the fitment of a 6 speed manual transmission were marketing ploys and do nothing to improve the product. The PD certainly does not need 6 speeds with its spread of torque and on the B5.5, top gear is negligably higher than the 5, only 120 rpm difference at 70 mph in top.

Although the bore-out is only 0.5mm, the incidence of head gasket failure on the 2.0 engine is disturbingly high. The bores are closely spaced on this engine anyway to minimise balancing problems and the loss of gasket land is crucial - a diesel with forced aspiration can produce very high cylinder pressures. The 16 valve head (another marketing "requirement" with little real advantage at high boost pressures) is also problematic in terms of cambelt wrap angles and follower wear.

I suspect VAG took their eye off the ball in the development of the later PDs - a combination of trying to keep up with Ford and the like and having their best engineers working on the common rail engines. The 2.0 PD was probably an "apprentice" job. Pity.

659.

My gf has an '07 Passat Tdi as her company car. I believe this has the 140 bhp engine. She has now covered in excess of 60k completely trouble free miles...mainly motorway. I 'chauffeur' her on a regular basis (yes, I am on the company insurance policy) allowing her to catch up with paperwork between customer calls, and as a motorway mile muncher it is brilliant. As is her 'Parrot' hands free piece of kit.
However...it is somewhat soulless to drive, and I would not spend my own money on one. The potential for expensive repairs, once out of warranty, would also put me off.
One of her colleagues, who drives 55k miles pa, has experienced intermittent problems with the electronic parking brake, but nothing else.

Suzuki, what do you need it for? Work/leisure/both? Kids/no kids? Specifically a saloon? Volvo S60/S80 are much less "Volvoey" in terms of that stuffy company-man now.

Failing that, I've been looking (can't afford mind) at the World of Subaru recently. You might want to look at the Legacy. Owners seem to absolutely love them and get one after t'other until they die. There are many Subaru disciples on this forum so you'd only be inundated with advice and recommendations.

Also read the used car reviews on HJ here - they're very good and based on real-world experience. HJ will say that Subarus are "pricey to run" however I got metaphorically slapped in the face when I suggested as much in another thread on this forum!

Legacy diesel far superior to a Passat PD in every respect

Everywhere you go there are dozens of abandoned Passats littering the roads. How they can make such unreliable cars in this day and age, heavens only knows.

Seriously suzi buy one they are a great car. I've got a 8 year old one and I love it. Don't listen to the others, they have got something against VWs. I think it may be envy.

You owe me a keyboard! lol :-)

An 8yr old one won't be the 2.0TDI and will be the old shape. A completely different car to the one the OP asked about.
