Fuel Shortages to come ? - Mr X
'Hundreds of energy industry contractors have walked out at sites in northern England and Scotland in an escalating protest over the use of foreign labour.
The dispute began at the Lindsey Oil Refinery, North Lincolnshire, on Wednesday after a construction contract was awarded to an Italian firm.
Unions said the contract should have been given to British workers.
In a second day of action, 800 people protested outside the refinery as workers from other sites joined in.'.

We know how little fuel is held in reserve in this country. A few days of this could see to the usual panic buying breaking out if production is affected in any way.

Under EU law, the Unions are wrong.
But the Unions are the main fund providers for the Labour Party.
The Labour Party is pro-EU.
But the leader, yes no other than flash Gordon who is busy saving the world, has now forgotten his pledge "British jobs for British people".

That will really test Gordon Brown. Is a new Winter of discontent brewing up? Surely not, when the Gordy's right hand, the Baroness, says we are in spring and seeing green shoots of recovery!

The construction workers are building a new plant ...not making petrol on the existing one. Dont worry.

Once that picket line goes up, I'm sure the tanker drivers will be more than happy to turn around and not cross them.

I remember the first series of "Auf Wiedersehen, Pet " in the early 80's. Back then the shoe was on the other foot. How times have changed.

With a weak £ and the likely reduction in UK wages migrant workers will soon find somewhere better to go. The big problem will be getting UK workers to do the work for low wages - time to cut benefits.

I'll admit that if storage of fuel at home was cheap, easy and safe I would stockpile some while its cheap. As it stands there's little point and who knows, with a global recession the price of oil may still have further to fall.

Not the same thing. We went to Germany co's they didn't have enough labour.

If this construction contract has been awarded on the basis of cost then perhaps the usual cheating, conniving back door tactics that plague my industry could be used and say to the British firms...."Can you do this for X as per the Italians, If so let's talk." Even at a higher cost it would work out cheaper than dole etc. for laid off workers.

This country is NEVER going to recover. See previous posts on Mandy's car loans.

Have a pleasant weekend all. MD

For the sake of all UK residents, present and future, I sincerely hope you're wrong.

I'm trying to run a business and pay my way in life. I can't afford to sit at home with an empty tank whilst congratulating myself for taking the moral high ground and not filling my tank every time the disruption of supplies rears its head.
Fuel Shortages to come ? - harib
The problem is that if everyone gets the same magic idea at the same time, instead of sitting at home with an empty tank, you're sitting in a two hour queue at a petrol station instead. Why not cycle/take the bus/train instead?

Don't panic Mr X I filled up tonight and there were only three of us in the supermarket fuel station - there's plenty to go round.

Very soon fuel shortages won't matter to a lot of us cos we won't be going to work.......or the shops because of the obvious.

Ah! happy days. Regards.....MD

you know of course MR X, its all a government plot to drive you out of business?

When does keeping your tank ' topped up " stop being prudent and become ' panic " ?

If thats what you do all the time it never does....

Panic buying is caused by people who normally only put a small amount in their tank then suddenly rush out to fill it for no good reason other than they have read a thread like this and have been panicked into filling it to the brim because a "reliable source" has told them there will be a shortage of fuel shortly...

You only have yourself to blame for starting the thread, MrX! ;)

Fuel Shortages to come ? - Mr X
But surely this board is only used by the countries most responsible drivers who would never dream of panic buying ?
Fuel Shortages to come ? - Altea Ego
you are?
Fuel Shortages to come ? - Mr X
No I'm not. I am being prudent in keeping my tank full at all times, just as I would keep the washer bottle full.
Fuel Shortages to come ? - Altea Ego
you are not being prudent. You have no need to keep your tank topped up at all times because there is no shortage of fuel to fill up when you need to

Except you and your ilk are keeping your greedy little tanks topped up and moving millions of gallons of fuel around needlesly.

And causing the panic buying.
Fuel Shortages to come ? - b308
All you need is one individual to pick it up, MrX, then it gets into the local news, then the nationals pick it up... and Hey Presto! Its a national shortage and everyone's panic buying...

And its all your fault! :)

And we'll all know who to blame! ;)
Fuel Shortages to come ? - nortones2
Might even be worth getting a bowser. No chance of running out, his vital service can be assured, and he can reduce vehicle weight and consumption by not running with unnecessary fuel.....

Oh well - back to the topic and away from flaming the OP please.
