98 2.0 16v slight wheezing noise from engine - skreech
Hi. all
recently bought a vectra 2.0 16v with ecotec engine. the performance is quite disappointing and also there is a slight background humming sort of noise from the engine which gets louder with the engine speed. there is no eml on and the car has just passed its mot so emmissions must be ok. could there be an issue with some of the breather hoses and where is the best place to check for this.

i ment to add in the 1st post. could the breathers in the throttle body being chocked be the problem.

Blocked breathers usually cause fluctuating idle speed /stalling in my experience of running high mileage X20XEVs, always worth unblocking them anyway. Background humming sounds like a bearing on the way out to me, hopefully not waterpump; :-/. When my X20XEV Omega was running sluggish the problem turned out to be HT leads, do you know how old the current ones are?

I think that the HT leads may be the original ones. the milage is 51k

Should be OK then, they generally seem to last about 100K, unless they've been bathed in hot oil due to a leaky cam cover gasket (common problem). Probably worth pulling a plug lead off anyway to check there's no oil in the recesses.

ye the cam gasket was the 1st job i done on the car about 6 weeks ago. the recces where the plugs and leads are was flooded with oil. i didnt think it would have damaged the leads though. there wasnt any misfiring. may be worth getting new leads. there is something wrong, i had a 1.3 escort that was faster. is it worth checking the resistance of the leads first.

I don't know what the resistance should be to be honest, maybe someone else does; I tend to buy these at around the 100K mark, so I change the HT leads anyway.
