00 2.0 HDI will not start - Valiantlad
Hi and a happy new year to you all

The car will not start and when the ignition is turned it tries to fire up briefly and then just turns over. I expect from waht I've already read on the forum that it's one of the following

1. Fuel pump - how do I know if it's Siemens or Bosch thats fitted? and where are they located

2. Glow plugs - although Ive not been experiencing any starter difficulties preceding this problem

3. Glow plug relay

Are my assumptions correct?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Kev

Hi Kev,

If it's a Siemens system then there's no pump in the fuel tank, if it's a Bosch then there is.

If it's a Bosch when you turn on the ignition can you hear the pump whine? If not check that first to see that you're getting power to it.

The HDi doesn't need plugs to start unless it's very cold but it does use them the help the engine run smoothly for the first couple of minutes or so.

Has the fuel filter been recently changed, could it be blocked?

Have you got any fault codes off the ECU?

Steve.

Is the engine spinning over fast enough when you try to start? If its slow the battery might be struggling and voltage dropping below the threshold required to open the injectors.
If you know very little and need to get it going reliably get a well reccommended garage to take a look as the HDi is a system that requires product knowledge and test equipment to gain a definitive answer to your problem and an economic repair.
Peter.

HI valiantlad, the primary fuel pump is submerged in the fuel tank, when you turn the key to start the vehicle, this pump delivers fuel to the main high pressure fuel pump which is powered when your engine is cranked over or started, the primary pump in the tank only runs for a few seconds to prime the main pump mounted on the engine, the primary pump is controlled by a timed relay which is usually found fixed to the inner guard passengers side under the bonnet, its colour is normally brown, size about 2/1/4 by 1/1/2 inches, Kev get somone to listen at the fuel tank ,take the filler cap off, crank the engine over if the pump is working you should hear it buzz a couple of secs, some five different pumps are made for this vehicle, new price £80, try this and let me know. >> Hi and a happy new year to you all

On initial problem. The fuel pump is in the tank and was not running when the ignition was turned on. I removed the pump and on refit it came on a couple of times when the key was turned but is now not functioning when the ignition is turned on.

Is there a pressure switch on this line that would inhibit the pump running if sufficient pressure is in the line?

Glow plugs are getting the electrical supply to them

I cracked one of the injectors and whilst turning the engine over there appears to be a lack of fuel getting through.

Plenty of spin on the negine when cranking -I'm jumping off a good one now as mine is flat.

Thanks

Oh forgot to add there are no fault codes up.

Do not undo injector pipes, they are supposed to be replaced if undone but more importantly there is a danger of death due to high injection pressures (3750 psi to start) and climbs to 7 times that under load.
