I don't see the point of having parking bikes on motorbikes. Even less do I see the wisdom of using them at night instead of dipped headlights as I saw twice last week. One was only a little scooter but the other was a half decent size bike going at a fair speed with a just silly little light less than a quarter as bright as my cycle light. It was pitch black and not just dusk and on an ordinary suburban road with street lights no better than average at best. Bikers, (and I used to be one) say motorists should look out for them but they have to do their bit as well.

If you buy a motorbike nowadays, you don't get the luxury of a headlamp switch, the lights are on with the ignition unless you pull the headlamp bulb plug(s) out. The State thinks riders should have headlamps on day and night. Parking lights on my bike are available only with the steering locked.

I suppose the bulb could have blown during use, they must blow more often due to the vibration and being on all day.

All vehicles MUST display parking lights when parked on a road or a lay-by on a road with a speed limit greater than 30 mph (48 km/h).
Lights must also be shown if parked within 10 metres of a junction.
(Oh, if only I was on commission with a book ful of tickets!!).

Manchester Police had a purge one night on a quiet residential dual-carriageway near me with a 40 limit. Householders had parked for generations with no light. There is virtually no traffic on this road. Result, outcry from residents, tickets cancelled as 'inappropriate' and the speed limit dropped to 30 mph by the council.

You can overcome the hard wired headlight on a BMW - there is a software "tweak"- Con and Use requires parking lights, unless I'm mistaken. I can't be bothered to look it up :-)

You can ? So how do you switch on the headlights if there's no switch ? If there is a switch, why do you need a "software tweak" in the first place ?
Oooooh my head hurts; I'm off for a lie down.

Headlights are wired permanently "on" with both my 2004 Sportster and wifey's 1996 model.
I don't intend to change that; Mr. SMIDSY needs all the help he can get!
