2000 2.8 Water Loss - logix_e39
Slight water loss noticed week to week on my E39 touring with 2.8 engine. Radiator and hoses look intact, and relatively new. Am I looking at head gasket problem, or is it likely that I'm suffering a small amount of loss into the gearbox cooling matrix please?

A check on the transmission dipstick will establish mixing of trans fluid and coolant.
Head gasket failure may show up with coolant chemical test. I remember earlier 6 cyl engines noted for warping, did this ever get sorted?

I had the same on a 97 328. I changed the radiator cap and it fixed the problem.... but then it started again. All looked OK. Eventually on looking carefully at the engine having switched off when hot, I found a hot coolant smell from a small rubber pipe taking hot coolant to the manifold. It had a small crack. Nightmare to change as so hidden but cheap to fix, but what was odd is that it was intermittent and hardly noticeable. Tricky to find. (New radiator cap is about £10 from main dealer. "German and Sweedish" in Balham do cheap new spares by post.)

Thanks for the reply, but mine doesn't seem to have the gearbox dipstick. Can't find it in the handbook either, I believe the box is a sealed for life unit.
