2004 1.7 Oil pressure light - billythechid
I have a 1.7 CDTI 49k FSH astravan recently purchased. Was serviced (oil and filter pre-purchase).

When the vehicle has stood for an hour or two and overnight i notice that the oil pressure light takes about 3 seconds to go out. Stop the engine and re-start straight away and it goes out immediately.

Is this a normal delay when cold?

Thank you.

That's not a good sign; get a pressure gauge screwed in and see what the oil pressure's like.

Screwloose will probably correct me politely if I am wrong. I think filters are meant to have a non-return valve in them to prevent the contents draining into the sump when you are parked. If there isn't one, or it is faulty, then the first few seconds of engine turnover go to fillng up the filter and then the light goes out. This may explain what is happening but it it is happening it is a BAD thing as he cold engine is turning unlubricated. The answer may be a an OE flter and not a cheapie.

You're perfectly correct. I'd hope it's now near-impossible to still find filters without a drainback valve - but I wouldn't put anything past the Chinese to save a few pence....

I don't think it's particualrly unusual for diesel engines in Vauxhall's to take a few seconds for the oil light to go out. I wouldn't necessarily be too worried about it.

It may not be unusual but is it a good thing? Turning engine and "low" oil pressure don't sound like a good idea.

I don't think the oil pressure is actually low (a check with a mechanical gauge would show whether or not this is true), it's just that the light isn't extinguished quickly.

Thank you for the replies.

I will be changing the filter for an OE element to see if it makes any difference. I'll let you know if it does.

Pretty sure I've seen a similar question asked some time ago (either on here or a Vauxhall forum). Most of the replies said the same thing.

perfectly normal for light to take awhile to go out on first start however it wont hurt to double check that the filter is correct, the housing should hold the oil in place untill the filter is released then it flows into the sump, that said you cant check that the oil is there!!!!!!
