Bumper paintwork repair - Dan J
Hi all,

Quick piece of advice. Some unidentified ******* (yes, I typed the stars in myself...) let a trolley hit the back of my Vectra resulting in the loss of a piece of paint about 1" square from the rear painted bumper.

Plan was to buy a touch up pen kit from Halfords and paint over it as best I could but the paint on the bumper is quite think and the battlescar is going to be noticeable even after touching up.

Any tips on how I can or should repair this damage without resorting to anything costly like resprays?

Much thanks in advance for your responses.

Dan

Try a Gb sticker over it? not sure if a special primer is needed before a top coat otherwise it flakes off.

Your local mobile minor repair specialist should be able to do an invisible repair. A friend had a hole in his bumper fixed using the local man. Have a look in yellow pages.

Your typo error has two meanings. Is the paint thin or thick?

Check out Honest John's facts page for a list of organisation that will touch up minor knocks. I reckon you are talking £30-70.

It does not hurt to ask a local bodyshop. The rear bumper of a Vectra comes off very easily so if you are in anyway handy ( I assume you are if you were suggesting to paint yourself ) offer to remove / refit the bumper for them. I have just replaced the bit of trim between the wing mirror and the wing on my Vectra, to get it painted metallic silver at my local Vx dealer was £17 + VAT of which £6 was for paint I would suggest that there is a minimum qty of paint that they can mix, and that the paint cost will not increase much. They may however need to do a bit of preperation to smooth it out. Remember Metallic colours need baked in an oven.

I guess it was expensive enough for all the size of the trim, but it looks as new and I could not have come close to the same finish, money well spent.

Vern, are you sure about this? The two-pack paints that I've used were air hardening. I think baking is necessary only where a very quick turn-round is required, as in a professional paint shop.

If you use the touch up stick you can build up 3 smooth layers of paint over 6 days. You can use a cocktail stick for the very finest bits, and if in doubt put less paint on not more then do an extra coat. Then the lacquer coat. If you don't like it, you can still remove the bumper (I don't know the Vectra but bolts are often under trim strips) and ask a local paint shop to spray it up.
