The General Lee and other famous cars - skorpio
Cycling to work this morning I heard a deep V8 rumble behind me. Then I was passed by a Dodge Charger decked out in the orange of the Dukes of Hazzard car. Fabulous noise it was and the car seemed larger in real life than I recall from the TV show.

What other famous cars have other BR's seen being driven on British roads?

Somewwhere back in the mists of time, I'm going to guess something like 1970, the Outspan company commissioned a motorised orange. It was a very authentic looking orange built around, I think, the running gear of a Mk1 Mini.

It featured in a series of TV ads but won my heart when it was brought to Edinburgh as part of a promotional tour. For some reason it ended up in our school car park one day.

We all wanted one, but being children, of course that was not possible. The enthusiasm to have one had perhaps fortunately, waned by the time we were old enough to drive.

I would like to know if it still exists though.

Can't think where I was at the time but I have seen that guy who makes road legal vehicles out of sofa's and armchairs. That was an eyeopener and had me smiling for miles afterwards!

I've just googled "outspan orange car" on "images" and there are loads of photos. Sadly I am too dim to create a link. My dates were about right 1969-1972 apparently.

The motorised orange was sitting at the back of Beaulieu motor museum when I visited last year. From memory the tax disc in the window had expired several years previous but the whole thing looked in good condition and there was a write-up stuck in the window about when/why it was manufactured.

Sitting in lectures in Brighton in the early 90s, on the main road outside passed a low loader carrying a Reliant van in Trotter livery, and a bright green Capri. We later heard that the cars had been spotted on an allotment not far away, so we high-tailed it over there, saw the cars again and watched half an hour of Del Boy, Rodders, Grandad and film crew standing about doing very little. They were filming the "Peckham Spring Water" episode.

At Santa Pod last year at a Mopar event there were 2 General Lee replicas, along with a load of other Chargers. There are a few companies you can hire them from for promo work, weddings, etc!.

I saw a DeLorean in full BTTF livery on the motorway one day. Was very well done, looked exactly like the real thing, but I doubt it was the one from the film nonetheless.

There is a DeLorean which I think says it was one of the ones from BTTF on display in the Cornish gold centre outside Redruth.
If it is from a film, maybe many versions of a given Car.
-Must be loads of repaired Trans ams from Knightrider out there , as the suspension got trashed very frequently on landing from jumps.

"chitty chitty bang bang" earlier this year.
at Bloxham steam rally near Banbury in North Oxon.
worth a visit for the fairground rides and steam engines, (100s of tractors as well)
the chap who owned the car, was handing out sweets to all the kids and chatting to all the adults, he was all dressed up, as per the actor in the film.
a real character. (ok seemed a bit nutty to me)
i guess to own a car like that you need to be a certain sort of person....
