Age 70 - Driving Licence Renewal - Armitage Shanks {p}
Is this something I get a reminder about, like Road Tax, or is it something I have to do on my own initiative because I can read the expiry date on my current licence? Thanks for any info. I know - it is probably on DVLA site but I can't find it!

moved from IHAQ as its totally motoring !

I was under the impression you had to get your GP to sign something to say you're still fit to drive.

No-self certification.GP is only required to sign for certain illnesses.

Depends if you have any additional classes which may require a full medical examination. You need to know because if you do not include the requirement in your application for the new licence it will arrive with the additional classes deleted. Is a special form which can be completed by your GP (who IF your eyesight does not fall into a normal category will be required to send you for an opthalmologist examination and certification.

IMO should be a requirement for even normal classes

Many of those classes require medical and eyesight tests before 70.

You get an automatic reminder about 3 months before you enter your official dotage, which is handy if, like me, you tend to put off things like visiting Sainsbury's and sitting in a booth with a flimsy curtain separating you from a line of check-outs while you wait for a card containing 4 unrecognisable images of yourself to pop out of a slot.

If you are happy to give the DVLA details of your digital passport there is no need to get the photo signed. You simply attach it to the renewal form, fill in the relevant sections and bung it off in the addressed (but not stamped!) envelope supplied. I sent mine off last week and have been told by friends who are ahead of me in the chase to the line that the new photo card licence arrives in pretty short time.

I had to get one of these plastic credit card licences. They sent me a reminder. There was a brief delay over my pacemaker - an extra process rather than a wish to get cyborgs off the road.

By the way, Armitage, are you by any chance related to the Twyford clan?

Do remember to take a scan of your old licence before you send it off; and when you get it back, cross-check that all the categories for which you have entitlement are still there.

It's not unknown for DVLA to leave motorcycle entitlement off, amongst other things; OK it might not affect the OP but worth checking none the less.

Wholeheartedly agree with Phil re. the eyesight tests BTW; I have to get my eyes tested every five years as part of my HGV medical after age 45, I fail to see (sorry for the pun!) why ALL drivers should not undergo the same. It's my firm belief that this alone would reduce accidents more than any number of speed cameras.

I received a form several months in advance.

.... it is probably on
DVLA site but I can't find it!

It's on www.direct.gov.uk and gives all the necessary instructions.

Note that it says "DVLA will send you, 90 days before your 70th birthday, a D46P ?application for renewal of a driving licence'."
