Insuring multiple cars on one policy ? - Alby Back
We currently have three cars. The reasons for that are mildly complex. My wife and I genuinely use them on a rotating basis depending on who is doing what and going where. Two of them need to be insured for social, domestic and business use and the other purely for social and domestic.

At present we have three insurance policies. The two business ones are in my name with my wife as a named driver and the third is in her name with me as the named driver. In reality we use each other's cars quite often as whatever was the last car to be parked blocks in the other two and it is just easier, if only nipping out, to use the one nearest the road whichever that happens to be.

Resultantly, it sort of makes a nonsense of the "main driver" statement as we both switch cars daily.

To address this and indeed with a view to saving money, I was wondering if anyone had heard of an insurance policy which would cover both of us for all three cars for all purposes ? Clearly it would almost certainly be more expensive than any one of the current policies but might work out cheaper than the total cost of all three.

Any thoughts or tips ?

Thanks, Humph.

There used to be an insurer who advertised this here. I'm sure a bit of googling will produce a result

Thanks Nsar, you are quite right. By going into the Insurance tab at the top of this page I found something which may help. Yet another twist on RTFM I suppose !

Thanks

A couple of insurers offer this now. Think they are usually called home fleet or similar policies. I have my two insured with Aon on the same policy. They offer 4 years initial NCD. I did have 3 with them to begin with under the same terms as you can set mileages and use all separately.

Admiral is another one: www.admiral.com/multicar/aboutMulticar.php?media=a...5

If you have modified or grey import cars chances are the main stream insurers won't offer it. Aon were about the only people that would do multi car with modified cars.

Many insurers will do it. However, it is still having separate insurance for each car. But they will combine them to one policy and will give you a discount in price.

I did once have a policy which simply covered me for any unspecified car owned by me. As I was the only driver there was in fact no limit to the number of cars I could theoretically have had. But I don't think insurers do that kind of policy now.

But most insurers give a discount if you insure more than one car with them. Priveledge do for example

I've just renewed the insurance on my Mondeo and the Boxster using Admiral. Worked out quite a lot cheaper than doing the two separately.

I have three bikes on one policy. There is just one insurance certificate with three reg numbers on it. The main bike is the expensive one and the other two were around an extra 20 quid each to add on.

It may well be more difficult and expensive having multiple drivers though.

Are there any other firms offering multicar policies?

The article in this weeks motoring says the best seem to include NFU, RSA, Adrian Flux, Saga, LV, RIAS, Frizzel, M&S, Prudential and Co-op. Do any of these insurers provide multicar policies. I'd like to merge all my policies onto one as I believe I could save some money!

I do this with Carole Nash as I've got a couple of vintage bikes plus the modern Harley, and I've recently bought a scooter for commuting.

Did consider insuring the scooter for both of us to ride (wife has Harley as well) but since for one thing we are both covered TPO on each others bikes, and for another wifey says she wouldn't be seen dead on the scooter, haven't bothered pursuing it!

Humph asked the question in 2008 and someone has responded recently with a new question.

I am sure Humph knows the answers.

Now the person hijacking a 12+ month thread I cannot be certain about.

EDIT: Humph had three cars when the question was posted. He now has two plus a employer provided vehicle. I think that is accurate.
