Servicing and service! - Quacker1964
When I took my new car for its first service, I had the service manual - ready with all the tick boxes and took it to the dealership (Nissan) for its first one. I was somewhat surprised and a little disappointed that the dealer stamp went into the book and nothing else. I'd expected much more for the cost paid.

I've now had 4 services - all at different garages and had (foolishly) expected the boxes to be ticked and more besides.

How does one know whether all tests & checks have been carried out? - sometimes it seems a damn expensive oil change as one can never be sure all work carried out.

Is this why a lot of people do their own servicing - or more likely find a garage to be trusted?

When I get my car dealer serviced I get, apart from a stamp in the book, an itemised invoice for parts, labour and sundries. I don't ask for it, it is done as a matter of course and I take it home and file it in case I sell the car and buyer wants to see it. In the end a stamp in a book in just that and proves nothing without a supporting reciepted invoice.

And ... the Same here, Although what does a tick mean ?
I recently had my Nissan serviced by a main dealer and they "ticked" that the headlight aim had been checked, but when I had it MOT'd by another garage, it failed on ...

Surely you got a separate invoice with itemised work? I would have thought that was a legal requirement.

Sorry all - I should have mentioned I do get a list (itemised) of parts and fluids - I didn't mean to mislead. What I was getting at was I thought the service book as well as being stamped & dated would have been neatly updated. I now realise to the person doing the test it is probably just another vehicle in their daily quota.

I just had different perceptions that's all - naively thinking their might be a written report etc.

Quacker,

I agree, pay £400 to the Ford place and get an invoice that's hard to understand and a stamp in the book you can barely read.

It's irrational, but I also think there is something missing, not sure what, though.
