Windscreen replacement - any companies to avoid? - nick62
The windscreen on my Legacy has just cracked and will need replacing, (stone chip damage).

I had the same problem on my Passat about four years ago and was definitely NOT impressed by the standard of the workmanship when it was replced by one of the big companies in this market.

The main problem was damage to paint on the surround, presumably where they had "levered" the old one out. I also had to wait ages to collect it, (at least two hours after the agreed time). When I removed under-body engine cover a couple of months later, I realised why it had been delayed.............they had dropped one of the very long self tapping screws that retains the lower windscreen surround into the engine bay and had obviously decided to get a new one from the VW dealer up the road, rather than bothering to recover it! Bad workmanship in my book and yes I am very pedantic when it comes to things like this.

I sometimes accidentally drop screws on the machinery I am working on (packing machines) and very often the customers own technicians will say "no problem, just get some more from the stores". They obviously have no concept of what havoc the "lost" screw can have on the mechanics (and sometimes electrics) of the machine, never mind if it ends-up in an actual product.............Rant over.............

Anyway, can someone please recommend a windscreen company that are at least "better" than the norm?

yea my last car was returned with the plastic cover below the glass behind the wipers all scratched when the screen was replaced

i was not a happy bunny, but unusually for me as i didnt have time to deal with it i ignored it

probably a young trainee having a go for the 1st time by the looks of it

dont think any of the big chains are regularly good at this, they are driven by money, and the business is insurance company driven often

I recently had the windscreen replaced on my Vectra by Autoglass. The replacement glass was Pilkington branded and I had no problems with the workmanship. The fitter seemed knowledgeable about his job.

Beware that if you use RAC AutoWindscreens they manufacture their own glass and it is RAC branded. However, I have also used them in the past with no issues.

Ask your dealer who they use, presumably they'll be of a decent quality.

Not necessarily. My dealer arranged for my car to have a new screen. The replacement screen was a pattern part made in South Africa and it seems very soft ~ after less than 3 years the wipers have worn the screen surface. I would go for a company that will either fit an OEM screen or at least one made by the same company. To my mind the screen quality is the most important factor. The fitting quality will inevitably depend on the particular fitter, not who he works for.

ive seen a few companys work over the years at the bodyshops ive worked at

it very much depends who comes out to you and what mood theyre in and how busy etc

one company that did seem to struggle was rac , i wouldnt want them to do work on my car , again though a differant area might be a differant story

oh and on the pattern vs genuine thing

ive had about 4 screens in my golf , the first 3 were pattern ones and picked up ullet hole style chips really easy , the forth time i asked that they fit a genuine screen and touch wood its lasted much better

might just be luck but i felt the cheapies chipped very easily
