Car Mobile phone repeater/amplifier - volcane

Hi
As most modern mobile phones have internal antennas and no connection to allow the use of a hard wired in-car aerial I have been trying to find a way of improving my in-car reception. (I know I shouldn't really use the phone at all in car and try not to but I would like to have a stable connection when I am on the phone)

Has anyone had experience of a repeater for use in car? I am considering the one offered by powerfulsignal.co.uk.

All opinions, experiences welcome

thanks

Those expensive things on your link require wiring to the phone as well by the looks of it. I'd just get an outside aerial just like the ones in the old analogue days.

Or a better phone?

Consider getting a stereo system (such as blaupunkt or similar) that feature a direct connection for the phone and thus provide a better signal?

With these type, wired in properly, when your phone rings it cuts out the stereo and lets you hear the phone call on your car speakers. Not very private but better than 1 of those stupid things on your ears !

I ordered the Traveller plus kit from powerfulsignal. It arrived yesterday, installed in about one hour. When it is powered up the phone immediately goes to full bars from 1 or 2, I'll test further on the road today (must remember to watch the road rather than my phone bars) there are a few areas where the phone can be heard (through the radio) searching for a signal.

Why didn't you just fit a proper parrot bluetooth kit I haven't been anywhere in europe where i did not have good reception. The phone when it regonises a drop in reception increases its power so there is no deteriation in quality obviously in a very few places there are not the masts to send the signal but these are rare .External aerials were of use when the old analogue system was is use but on a digital cell system they are of no practical use.
What you have actually bought is a battery saver nothing else.

The Parrot bluetooth things all seem to be very expensive compared with, say, Jabra.

The Parrots range from £80 to £140, while the the Jabras are around £30 - £40.

I own a Jabra so I know that they work, are you saying that the Parrots are worth another £100?

There is also a problem using a booster antenna in that the base station measures the signal it is receiving from the mobile and can use this to reduce the power of the signal it sends, particularly if the OP is using a 3G phone. The result is that you receive a signal with a higher bit error rate.

The base station should be basing its tranmit power to the mobile based on the received level & quality at the mobile, as reported back to the base station by the mobile; so the base station will try and negate the effect of the booster by reducing the signal level to the point where the quality is just good enough - the aim of any GSM network ( by and large) is to reduce the transmit power at both ends of the connection to the minimum commensurate with maintaining the call quality. This maximises battery life at the mobile end and reduces interference in the network.

I'll be interested to see how this device performs, particularly in strong signal areas. Passive repeaters tend to be a bit of a pain to integrate into mobile networks, although I've no experience with in car units.

All I can say is that my parrot which I bought on ebay for around £80 is spot on it also has the GPS antenna ,nice display and works perfectly through the car HiFi yes its well worth the money ,past experience with SE and Nokia leave a lot to be desired and those clip on ones are pretty grim.Just done a bit of homework on mobile phone amps as described akin to snake oil as I have said before and reitterated by others it will defeat its self and probably cause more problems.

There appears to be a little confusion!

Andy is right I know nothing about the roads I travel on and do in fact have coverage and just have a useless bluetooth kit and that a good bluetooth kit would solve all my problems in fact my problems yesterday at the usual spots were in fact caused by me mixing up a banana for my mobile phone, the yellow colour should have been a clue along with the lack of pairing with the bluetooth kit!

Test results.

Tested over 200 miles today mostly backroads along with new bypass roads in Co.Monaghan full bars everywhere, places where the phone consistently over many months showed no reception or at best 1 bar (nokia 6300) and where a call could not be made or would be lost 4 bars were shown and calls came through crystal clear. Switching the power off and on clearly demonstrated the effect of the repeater.

I spent some time deciding what to do before I purchased and I'm very happy with the result, I agree most amplifiers/repeaters available are useless so careful research is needed.
