rebuilt and restored - seataltea
All suggestions accepted.

I'd like to get hold of a Mk1 Golf Cabrio which has been fully restored with an engine rebuild bringing it to almost 'as new' concours condition.

It's for my wife and I'd budget about 10k for such a car.

Having searched the net, decent cars don't seem to exist and the VW community seem to favour the standard GTi, the camper and the Beetle.

Where should I go to get one off the shelf ? Should I buy a nice non restored example and give it to a specialist to restore ? If so who ?

It's my view that if VW brought this car back as was it would sell.

There are restored cabbies out there but generally after spending much time, effort and cash restoring them people generally don't want to sell them. You have a decent sized budget however if you were having a professional do the job then even that may not be enough for a full bare metal resotration.

There is an attractive one on EBay, which has had quite a bit spent on it. Is it essential to rebuild one? I personally much prefer cars that have been regularly maintained and looked after over the years. The money saved could be spent on refurbishing and overhaul on an as required basis.

If you don't mind LHD you could try some of the German websites like autoscout24.de and mobile.de. A quick scan of the prices would indicate that 10,000 quid should buy you the best one in the entire world. They're frequently bought as a third or fourth car in a household and only driven in the Summer. Here's a 1993 model in (allegedly) perfect unrestored condition with 11,500km on the clock for 9,900 Euros:

That car in Germany certainly looks the part and if it is as it says for about 8k UKP it will save you around 2k to spend on anything else that may need work on the car.

Can't link to AutoTrader but there's a white, 1990 car with 36k claimed genuine miles that would fit the bill for £3,800 at the moment.

May or may not be concours or anywhere near it but it has to be worth a look - located in Haslemere, Surrey or thereabouts.

That white upholstery is really hard on the eyes.

That white one looks good and will leave plenty in the budget for maintenance/improvements.

That wouldn't surprise or worry me with this kind of car ie summer runabout, novelty
