I have bought a number of cars over the years at my local Britisha Car Auctions, always been very pleased -Up til this week.
I was aware of their buyers fees, but now they charge for handling cash - 1%, credit card payments - 2%, ok I suppose, they are a busines after all. But the real killer is that they now charge for processing (sending off) the the V5 docs to the DVLA £23.50. I note in their legal notices that by law the new owner must get the V5 completed and send off to DVLA so when I was paying I asked for the docs so that I could follow the law and send them off, the answer was NO you cant have them we get the new owner to fill their details in and we (BCA) send them off for you as part of the service to the buyer.
So -by law I am supposed to send the docs to DVLA but BCA insist on doing this (all very easy for the buyer in the past) and for doing this without any option from me they charge £23.50. Surley a 'service is something I should have the choice to accept or decline...Can this be legal - a forced charge for something that I should be doing.
Any Legal Eagles out there with thoughts on this

I have just changed cars, and like you I expected as a seller AND a buyer to send off 'both bits' of the forms.
However, on the new log book, only the seller informs Swansea. On both my sale and purchase this was the case.
My only reservation is that when you sell the car, you hope the Post Office do their job, before your buyer racks up parking tickets and conjestion charges etc.
Its a bit rich for them to charge as it is a legal obligation on the seller to tell Swanea who the new owner is. I suppose BCA is not the seller, just the sellers agent.

Another plus then for using Joe Dowd as you get to send off the docs yourself and save £23.50.

I've used BCA for a number of years and ADT before that.
Recently I've found the buyers fee getting higher even paying trade fees.
It appears BCA are getting greedier, especially for the small trader. I think in future I might switch to getting stock from private buyers and take the hassle out of going to auction. BCA needs to give a break to the trade; if they have to make such a profit then fleece the private buyers. They get commission for buyers and sellers. For the trade, they need to allow them to sell for a nominal fee and reduce the buyers fees. Otherwise small traders will give BCA a wide berth.

ebay has a better cost model.
all fees should be attributed to the seller, not the buyer. This practise will lose custom.

I disagree. So they should do away with the sellers fees. Just charge a nominal fee for storage.
