03 4.4 V8 - buzzing noise - hm
Hello all,

I have 'borrowed' my old mans range rover recently, 03 plate autobiography.... and the car seems to have a really irritating buzzing noise from under the front the windscreen somewhere..

it happens from approx 55mph up and does not really stop.... I have tried the old slapping the dash trick but to no avail....

it seems to my like something is 'resonating' / vibrating.

recently the beast was converted to Gas, but it did not do it when I first drove it... it just happen on the way home from work today.

Has any one every come across this issue?

Thanks

H

Hi H, my name is Nicolina and I have a range rover 4.4 hse. 03 plate.
I have recently had my car converted to LPG and whilst on the way to Maidstone today on the M20, once I reached 55mph, that buzzing sound alarmed me. As i accellerated to 70 it was so loud that i had to pull over thinking like a girl that my windscreen would cave in on me, as it was vibrating at a really loud level. Sounded like i had 5000 blue bottle flies in my car.lol, although it was not a funny matter.
Have you found out what it could be? I asked the rac and they said the windscreen was fine and when i phoned rangerover they said the glass is solid and they dont know what it can be. I believe it is comming from the grill vent at the front whichis underneath the windscreen and the air is coming through they and hitting the window causing the vibration through the vents, but this does not make sence that wind spped can make such a sound.?
Id really appreciate it if you mail me to let me know any idea.
Many thanks

I can't really see it being a fuel issue.

Have you checked the air vents for dried leaves etc?

Hi,im a landrover technician. this is a common fault with the earlier rangerovers. There is a bulletin about this. its where the scuttle panel touches the windscreen.all you do is use a strong sealer(silicon or tiger seal) to bond it down.that will stop it causing the buzzing noise.

I had this problem with my RR Vogue 2003, took a little time to pin down but I got it in the end...
It's the bottom window rubber - well its more a trim than a rubber, there is a quite big black plastic trim piece that runs almost horizontally along the bottom of the windscreen, the wipers protrude through it and it disappears under the hinged edge of the bonnet.
The point where this trim meets the glass of the windscreen is the source of the problem, its not fixed to the glass and ends up buzzing when at speed, I used gaffa tape to prove my theory. Maybe you could try the same.
I've since removed the gaffa tape but I'm reluctant to silicone the cavity because the screen has a unrepairable stone-chip and so needs replacing, siliconing the cavity may complicate matters. I'm not sure if a windscreen replacement company would replace the trim.

The noise is from the plenum trim at the windscreen lower/wipers.
This trim has a sealing bead (like dun dum) on the surface that touches the screen once the trim has been removed it rarely fully re-seals. Adding some extra sealer along the full length of the trim to screen mating face will cure this irritating noise.
Good luck.

Very many thanks Jon and to all the other posters on this topic. I have had this problem - wind noise over 55 mph (but the starting speed varies depending on variables like wind speed, wind direction - it might be 55mph travelling East and 70mph travelling West) for over a year. I'd worked out that it was wind related, and had the car into the garage again iin desperation today. They changed the windscreen wipers and I was pleased they thought they'd found the issue. However, they hadn't - the problem was still there! Like some of the others, I'd had an LPG conversion done (so I was a bit worried about this similarity) but this issue only showed itself on mine after I'd had some work done on the engine, which would have required the bonnet removed and possibly the plenum trim, so that's probably the common thread with the others who have had work done on the engine. I've searched all the forums and tried the A-pillar seal, oil filter mountings etc, which have been suggested by others, but as soon as I ran some electricians' tape along the trim where it meets the windscreen, the problem vanished. Some silicon sealer should do it (and this will be easy for a technician to cut back in the future if required). I still writing this with a smile on my face - I can't believe we've found the problem. Thanks again everyone!!!

My thanks also to posters on this topic. I had the same problem with my 2005 LHD TD6 HSE (a buzzing noise from somewhere low down on the windscreen at motorway speeds) and was despairing - even after a visit to a windscreen "specialist". The cause turned out to be exactly as suggested - the rubber on the plenum trim vibrating. Applying black sealing mastic between the rubber and the windscreen cured the problem. It was relatively easy to apply: simply 'peel' (lift) the rubber away from the screen and apply the mastic, then press the rubber back into place, any surplus being easy to cut and peel away once the mastic has set). Cost of repair: 15 Euros & 15 minutes work. I too now have a smile on my face! Thanks to all!
