2000 2.0HDi cam belt tensioning - Eric1947
Just read an old post regarding cam belt tensioning on a Peugeot 406 2 litre hdi. I was looking to buy a tool to do mine but after reading the comments, realise that I maybe don't really need one.

Can anyone confirm that the 5mm deflection with firm thumb pressure is sufficient?

Incidentally, do you know of any reasonable priced tool that would do the job other than the expensive electronic seems tester?

Really would appreciate any advice.

I asked a few weeks back and the recommendation was if the belt is able to do a 45 degree twist in the belt between the cam and water pump.

I actually changed mine two months ago and probably had the tension right but I put a cheap OEM belt on and it whistles at 3000 rpm. Its probably ok but I for one don't trust it so I'm putting a better quality belt put on tomorrow morning. I intend to use the 45 degree method.

45 degree twist between the cam and the fuel pump wheels. The engine must be cold - this is important because the belt tightens as the engine expands - quite a bit.

659.
