Another alternator problem - Clanger

Had a lovely drive in the BX from Lauder to Catterick down the A68 yesterday, the Geodesy politely reminding me that accident blackspots seem to occur wherever there's a speed camera - what a coincidence, eh?

Anyway, every few miles the battery light came on, very faintly and the headlamps seemed to get brighter. Then the light would go out and the headlamps would settle back to normal. Inspection showed that the alternator belt was tight.

This morning the battery was full of life although the battery light kept coming on and going off on the 50 mile trip to work.

The car is a 1992 Citroen BX GTi with 82K miles on it; any clues, anyone?

Check the battery connection. Similar prob on my old Cavalier. After a new diode pack, then alterator fitted under warranty, the main agent discovered a high resistant joint on the + battery connection - which in turn put a hairline crack down the side of the battery due to the heat build up. Also replaced battery under warranty, but not the battery lead - excuse being that it wasn't a warrantied component!!

If battery terminals clean and tight i would suspec the voltage regulator showing signs of impending failure.

would concur with above answers adding that although miles are not high it could be worn brushes. Many garages will do an electrical check for free. If after checking all the wiring and the battery condition you still have the problem, I'd be tempted to try a secondhand alternator.

Thanks, guys.
Fortunately the BX alternator is easily accessible. I'll have a root around battery terminals and earth points.
Took it out last night in the rain; the extra voltage really makes the wiper fly!

Had similar problem on an Escort.Fixed by remaking the connections on the back of the Alternator.
