1996 1.9TD - Clutch change advice - PaulyBoy
I have a 1996 Xantia 1.9 TD. The clutch has 'gone' and the garage we use are advising that it might be better to write it off, as it could cost around £500 to fix - probably more than the car is worth. Any advice or thoughts?

hi PaulyBoy

I guess it really depends on how much you value the car, is it worth a £500 repair to you?

If it is pretty sound and you intend keeping it for a year or two more, it might be worth it.

Does it have a current MOT??

How long have you had it? Is it exhibiting any other potentially costly faults? How long is the MoT? Are you confident of your own ability to source and check out a sub £600 replacement?

If £500 buys a realible hack another year it's worthwhile compared with the lottery of replacing it. We kept a 91 BX until 2005 spending up to £750 some years (but just self servicing in others) when it was worth pins. The berlingo that replaced it lost three times that in deprecation in the minutes it took to leave the showroom.

RATS has it dead right, imho. Why scrap it just for a clutch if the rest is ok and you are happy with it?

Bet there's no corrosion anywhere!

Someone will get more than £500 notes worth of bits from it. Fix it and keep it, they don;t make cars like that anymore.

£500......were struggling to talk people into £300 round here for cars weve looked after for years!!!!!

What's up with it? Has the pedal gone to the floor - if so it may just be the clutch clip has failed. If the clutch has gone, then £500 is about right. The bits are about £125 from GSF, and the book time is c7 hours - so £350 @ £50/hour inc. An experienced Citroen independent might do it faster / at cheaper rate, but I wouldn't farm this out to a certain high street chain - you need remove the LHM tank really, which is a bit out of their normal experience. It is a bit of a nasty job, but a replaced clutch will be unbelievably light!

£500 sounds a bit much, I had the clutch changed on my Xantia 1.9TD for around £225 about 3 years ago. It may have gone up a bit since, but the same garage replaced the clutch on my Xsara HDi for £311 just this week.

Seconded, I had an S-plate Xantia 1.9TD clutch replaced about 3 years ago at a local independent Cit specialist and it was about 220 quid.

Shop around for a reputable clutch or Cit specialist who might be able to do the job at a lower rate, and if the car is otherwise in reasonable nick, get the job done. I'm frequently staggered by the intergalactic mileages some Xantias on Ebay have effortlessly racked up.

yeah with the right nowhow you can knock these on the head in just a few hours
but has the clutch pedal clip broken as well?

Hi Guy!
Thanks for all the great advice and help. It sounds like the general thread is get it fixed and run the car for another couple of years if it's otherwise fairly sound. Thanks again - a great help!

Hello.

I have had my clutch replaced for 140. I bought a valeo clutch off ebay for 50 quid and got it changed at a local garage, they charged me 90 quid labour. I live in Birmingham and can recommend the garage.

Regards

My dad had a Xantia like yours, it turned into an absolute money pit in the end.
It was literally one thing after another, and nothing simple either.

My advice would be to get rid.
