Brake pads and discs - Meerkat
To prevent me from being a complete blonde and being totally ripped off on Friday when I take my car in, can anyone advice me on a ball park figure I can expect to pay for brake pads and discs to be replaced on my beloved passat? Thanks in advance!

perhaps ring around a few garages and compare prices?

As clay says: ring 2-3 garages and get quotes.

If you're not sure of what you want, ask the first one to explain fully what is involved and any likely extra costs /... so then you are prepared for the next one.

Always get a quote before work starts : garages see blondes and their eyes light up: £££££S

Discs are about £18-25 a wheel (depending on make).
Rear pads are about £12-£20 total (depending on make)
Front pads are about £32 - £42 total (depending on make)
Sundries such as brake fluid and cleaner and grease should be around £10.

Labour should be two hours tops, it's a straightforward job, so maybe £70+

So total, maybe £200 ish?

Thank you all for your responses - I'm ready for battle now! (perhaps I should just dye my hair brown!!)

I paid £220 for all discs and pads (incl VAT) at an independent VW specialist, seemed very reasonable to me.

My friendly garage charged me £100 + VAT for discs and pads to the front of my Golf, in Coventry.

Just need to find another £100 to get the rears done as well.....

This is one thing I am dreading on the Scenic. The rear discs come with the wheel bearings pre-installed, and genuine ones are £240 a pair for the parts alone!!

Thank heavens rear brakes don't wear out particularly quickly!!!

Cheers

The last time I took my own car to a main dealer for servicing was my 2000 MY Passat for an interim service. I was rung up and told that the front discs and pads needed replacing (at 50k miles!) and the rear pads would need doing within the next 10k miles and it would cost £400 plus the £250 service! I refused to approve the work, took the car to an independent who said there was at least 20K left on the front pads and the rears weren't anywhere near 50% worn. I ended up taking the car to 90K with just the front pads replaced at 70K. At the last count, the independent ended up with all the service work on my car, 2 of our company cars, 2 family cars and my neighbour's Golf.

seemed very reasonable to me.

This is reasonable for doing all of the pads and discs.
The key thing with brakes is did they all need doing in the first place. My dad has an immaculate Passat and the dealer has just told him that the brakes needed changing. This rather surprised me as the car is 5 years old, but has done less than 20K miles of very delicate driving. Given the Passat is broadly similar to my A4, I drive not so delicately and get 45K + from my brake pads.

Too much delicate braking can allow the discs to corrode, particularly the rears.

Under £100 if you look around

Here's a short video on changing rear brakes (rotors/pads) on a 2003 VW Passat. This video applies to the 1998-2005 VW Passat and 1996-2001 Audi A4.
