I have someone interested in buying my car.
He hasn't seen it but he lives a long way away (He - Southern Ireland, me - Kent). He wisely wishes to check that everything is as it appears before making the journey and has requested the chassis number and the VS5 number from the registration document.
I have spoken to him and we have agreed a price subject to him flying over and viewing. He seems a genuine chap, we had a good chat.
Is it OK to give out the VS5 and chassis number? Is the registration number not enough?
Thanks

give him the reg no and he can then HPI it - seems safest for both of you. Can't you put some pics on a website for him?

The last time I HPI'd a car I needed all that info, and more besides, for the full check.

I'm not sure what the concern is.
The reg number is on the front and back of the car and is available to anyone who drives past.
The chassis number is frequently visible through the windscreen and is available to anyone walking past.
HPI need both for a full check I think.
Unless you have a very rare&expensive car why would anyone want to try and get them off you for anything other than legit reasons?

I thought I maybe worrying about nothing, I have never been asked for the V5C before so thought I would ask.
Thanks for the help.

Hi
I may be wrong but I think that if you have the number off the V5C, It enables you to check the mot history on line including details of any failures or advisories..
Best wishes,
Neil

njdleeds is right above. If the buyer is genuine, all these things help him check that you and the car are also genuine. If the car is going to Eire, it will need reregistering.
Is the car quite expensive, rare or unusual? Travelling from Ireland would ring a few bells with me, especially if the car is not that out of the ordinary. The VIN and reg are available from just walking past but the V5C number is not, although I am not sure what a scammer would do with it.

My thoughts are:
What was the guys telephoen number? Irish land line/mobile? or a personal issue number?
Will you get a cheque for more than the amount asked for with request to transfer remainder?
