In the Honest john review of the 9-5 there is a note to avoid Avon tyres. Why is this?

They're rubbish, especially the ZZ3 widow-makers.

They're rubbish especially the ZZ3 widow-makers.
Thats strong i've got a pair on the fronts of one of my numerous sets of wheels for my one and only remaining 124 merc, havent found any problems, what makes you say that?
Should i be concerned and use the goodyears or the vredesteins instead?
My sons got them on his scooby and thinks they are fine too.

No idea why Hj slates the Avons .
As far as I am concerned I refard Avon as a top brand and have had only good experiences with them.
As far as I know they are from the Pirelli stable.
Would expect reason, not opinion, to be reason to avoid them.

Mytyres.com no longer seems to stock Avons, but when they did the test data they published showed them to comparable with other premium brands. They used to be developed in the UK (not necessarily the case now though) and consequently rode more quietly on rough UK surfaces. The ZV3s I had on a recent car provided excellent grip, but at the expense of a long life.

I've emailed HJ to ask why.

The Avons (ZZ-something, probably ZZ3) I had on one of my cars were reasonable when new but I had to scrap them after 8k miles. They had plenty of tread left but the understeer became absolutely appalling.
Other Avons may be better but mine were an expensive mistake.
