Sci engine - kiss (keep it simple)
I am looking to buy a Mondeo with a budget of 5-6k It sounds like the TCDi diesels could be an expensive mistake if things go wrong, so what about the Sci engine? Are there any known problems with this technology?

Tthe 1.8 petrol no frills, no turbo, chain driven cam, 35 ish to the gallon no massive bills the only one to buy when over three years old.

The SCi was a lean burn and DI version of the 1.8, on paper it was a little more powerful and a lot more economical though in practice I think there was little in it and as with VAG FSI engines it really needs 98 Ron fuel, the one to go for is the 2.0, much more gutsy and similar economy to the 1.8.

Don't bother with the 1.8 SCI, it was a very troublesome engine. Ford could never get it right and quickly dropped it. Buy a regular 1.8 or 2.0 petrol instead.

IIRC the SCI was particularly poor with lots of short journeys, although prone to problems in any case.

In fact, there was a post about this engine some time ago...

Thanks for the information. Sounds like one to avoid.
