Alfa romeo 145 recently just conked out for no reason......thought at first it was wet electrics, coil pack etc.
On closer inspection .......looking through the timing cover(right hand side of rocker cover, sitting in drivers seat)...I can see 2 pulleys whick I presume are belt pulleys......there is no belt to be seen.....am almost 99% sure timing belt has snapped but could some of you more techy gents please advise?
Many Thanks.

And the year and engine is....?
|
Not good; presumably this is the 2.0 ltr[?] and if that's the timing belt that's gone missing, then there's a high risk of valve/piston contact on these.
It's 3 hours to replace both the belts; the only thing to do is fit the timing belt only and, if it's free to turn, do a compression test.

Thanks for the reply S...as far as i know it's a 1.6......has been a money pit since day 1(daughters car).....told her to buy a nice corolla....
Re:pulleys they should should have some kind of belt on them?
|
Ah; right. [There are six versions of TS in '98.]
The 1.6 doesn't have the balancer belt, so the time is only 2.75 hrs - still a big hitter though.
If they're cogged [grooved across] pulleys and they're under the cover where you said - then yes.

Cheers for taking the time S to answer....scrapheap for Alfa methinks!

when was the belt last changed ? The TS engines have a 36K interval

A full camblet change on these engines is about £500 which includes belt, tensioner and variator.
If the belt has broken then at the very least there will be bent valves, but you won't know until someone has a look. This will quickly escalate costs. Engine rebuilds can easily cost over £1000. If your daughter really likes the car and there is nothing else wrong with it, then it may be worth fixing. A 98 Alfa 145 can be a money pit if you are unsure of the history / provenance. A looked after one can still be worth £1500.
Me, personally, I would find out exactly what is wrong with the engine first and then weigh up against other impending/known problems.

Belt was changed at 64k Adverse.....present mileage is 94k.
Car cost 2,700 euros approx 6 months ago.....plus cost of cracked sump....new coil pack, and clutch cylinder!
I wont knock all italian cars as my other daughter has a Fiat punto bought as a stopgap car ...that was a year ago and was and only cost 600 euro, guess its the luck of the draw.
As regards her liking the car......I am going to convice her she DOESN;T like it.
Thanks for all the replys every one.

A fiat punto and a 145 are virtually the same cars the only real difference being the twin spark engine. If the car otherwise is in good condition then they are pretty easy to repair even if it needs a engine rebuild and you will pick a second hand motor up very easily especially if you are in mainland europe at one of the massive recycling centres.
