As a follow on to the "Police with attitude" thread. While working alongside the police (a shift of 12 servicemen and 2 police) for a few months, one quiet evening we were ribbing the cops about harrassing poor innocent sailors returning from the pub. The result was a poll, as in subject. Only one of us had spoken to a cop inthe last year (speeding ticket), current job accepted. The police told us this is normal for the vast majority of the law abiding public, and they had their regular "customers" who they knew well and saw on a regular basis.
