MOT Failure? rear door won't open - carl233
A very general question, is this an MOT failure? The rear door is closed securely and latched in a safe position. It will however not open from the inside or outside due to a failed latch. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The usual uneducated opinionated attitude that has made 'modern Britain' what it is today a degenerate self interested and self righteous country. If no one is ever in the rear of the vehicle even a fool could understand it is no more dangerous than a three door hatchback.

Can find many cases of door failures but not an exact answer to the MOT aspect of the question. The research I have done on this topic seems to offer conflicting advice.

Polo passed an MOT when the opening mechanism on the passenger door was broken... I'm not entirely sure he should have though.

Your answer is in this thread, I think: www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=2&t=55...1

Looks like as long as the door is latched securely, it's not a failure. Sounds like they are more worried about the door flying open than someone not being able to get out (guess they could always get out the other door)?

"its dangerous in the extreme if you ever carry rear passengers"

As dangerous in the extreme as driving a two-door coupe?
MOT Failure? rear door won't open - bell boy
worse bbd because in a two door coupe and the water is entering the cab you will know that to get out you need to go through the front doors the same way you got in,unfortunately chummy got in on the passenger side and slid along the seat to the other side due to the amount of traffic on the roads

ok? ;-o

I agree, same goes for failed 3-door front seat tilt mechanisms.

....and within the above name tome is says:-

This inspection does not apply if no driver's or front passenger's doors were fitted as part of the original design of the vehicle.A lack of door handles because of original design characteristics or specialist modification is not a reason for rejection providing the door can be latched securely in the closed position. 5. Open and close the driver's and passenger's doors. Check that each latches securely in the closed position. Check also that front doors can be opened from both inside and outside the vehicle
a. a driver's door or any passenger's door does not latch securely in the closed position
b. a driver's or front passenger's door cannot be opened from both inside and outside the vehicleNote: reason for rejection 5b

Front doors must open from inside and out.

A rear door not opening is not in it's self a reason for failure, but all doors, boot/tailgate, bonnet and fuel filler cap/flap must open to be able to complete the test.

If any don't, then VOSA state that the test cannot be fully and completely conducted, and hence must be aborted.

VOSA actually advise testers to check such basics before starting a test and in such cases to issue either a verbal or computer generated 'refusal to test'

My previous car was a 3-door Fiesta.
The drivers seat folding mechanism had failed months before the test was due & of course i forgot all about it.
However the tester noticed because i watched the test, it was still a pass.

Thanks for the advice. I won't bother to fix it the latch has failed on the rear door and a new part is 120 from main dealer. No one uses the rear of the car so it is not a safety issue. The MOT is due in a few weeks so it is good news that this fault will not in its self cause a fail.

Whether or not the car would be an MOT failure, I'm pretty sure your insurance company would want to know, since any harm that comes to a passenger as a result of not being able to evacuate the vehicle "in a reasonable manner" might make you personally liable for damages rather than the insurance co stumping up.

Your insurance company might accept that you seal up the rear doors, but might then insist that you fit folding front seats (i.e. seats from a 3 door rather than a 5 (assuming car is a hatch back)).

Of course, if you removed the rear seats, then that shows that you never have any intention of carrying rear seat passengers.........

I am amazed at how people will compromize saftey for £100! . If the doors broke then fix it! If your ever in a prang & the front doors jam you may well want a working rear on on iether side. I agree with bell boy. I used to be involved with accident recovery & that makes you think. If a car is upside down in a ditch with the weight of engine in the front often tips them front heavey wich normally prevents fronts doors opening! & in the event of fire any door is a bonus. Having been involved in a serious motorway pileup where my front doors jammed & the car filled with smoke I can tell you even with panic a window doesn't break quickly when you want it too! I suspect you have a 40" flat screen & sky & all the other luxuries in life but spending money on a saftey issue doesn't cross your mind!
