Glass's price - Is it of any use? - catalyst2
We are positively shocked at the minute at what we are being offered for our Mazda Tribute (part-ex price). Our tribute has 35K and is A1 condition, 03 reg, serviced at main dealer since new). We have been offered 20 to 30% less than the Glass's price (which is already much lower than the Parker's) by 6 dealers (4 different makes).

I have checked on Auto Trader, the same Tributes as ours are being sold by the trade between 5.5K and 8K.

Is there any reasons for this or are they just trying it on?

I thought it was a good time of the year to do a deal! Not really as it seems.

If everyone is offering similar prices then that gives you a true idea of what demand there is for it. The guides are just that - if it is a model a dealer thinks they can't shift or get underwritten then they'll prefer to lose the deal than get stuck with a car nobody wants.

If you are that unhappy with the price then sell it yourself is the other option.

Parkers is, IMO, about as useful for used car prices as tea leaves. You don't say what model it is but a 2.0 Gxi on an 03 with 35k comes in at 4700 CAP Clean and 4350 CAP Average.

You don't say what you are being offered but somewhere between those would be more than fair.

If its a petrol 4x4 the market really does not want them at present.Probably make more exported.

But , you need to look at the overall deal. Is what you are buying also less than the book price?
If so , fine, if not ,well you need to sell it yourself , or take it to auction for the real market test. As a famous lady said, 'you can't buck the market'

There's always a big difference between trade-in price and dealer's asking price - the dealer may have spent considerably on preparation, they'll need to fund a warranty, make a profit and often deal below the asking price.

Sell it yourself if you disagree with 6? dealers but be prepared to take several months and you might still get no more for it.

If it is a V6 3 Litre auto it will take ages to find a buyer.

Low image and 20mpg with petrol @ £4.75 / gallon.................

Thanks for the advice.

I am being offered £3.4K for the Tribute tops against cars which have a list price of roundabout £10K.

Pd, what's CAP?

What would be the best magazine/website to sell it?

Do you really reckon it might take months to sell? is that the current situation with these SUVs?

Thanks DD.

Pd, is this CAP price of 4.7K tp part-ex a Mazda Tribute?

It does sound high, especially as the maximum we've been offered has been 3.4K! (with only £500 rebated at the other end)

The quick way, safe way & DEFINITE way is through auction, www.sure-sell.info/ is the current favourite for disposing of GENUINE private vehicles.

Thanks for the info Vansboy.

To Pd: is this CAP price of 4.7K to part-ex a Mazda Tribute or is it what you could hope to get privately?

It does sound high, especially as the maximum we've been offered has been 3.4K! (with only £500 rebated at the other end) -well KIA offered us 4.3K straight off (and a discount on their car on top of that) but we turned it down (not great to drive we thought)

CAP is only a guide but the offers you are getting reflect the fact that from a dealer's point of view it is a car they don't really want so are offering low figures. A dealer might value it at £4700 if they actually want the car but it looks as if most don't.

Remember dealers look at a car from a selling point of view and however nice a car it maybe if it is a car they don't know the market for and/or they feel it may take months to sell they'll want it very cheap.

Dealers usually vary margins depending on how easy a car is to sell. For example, a dealer may well work on a small margin on a Gold TDI GT 130 with 50k on the clock because it'll be a quick turnover and profit. On something large and petrol they'll want a big margin as it may take months to sell.

I reckon you could do better than 3.4k in a quick private sale. You could try a well described no reserve ebay auction, other sites some have suggested above or even via an auction house with something like BCA's SureSell sales. You might only get £4k but even at that you'll be £600 better off and can then hammer a discount off whatever you are buying with cash.
