2001 2.0 HDi - Engine compartment whine - past_it
Hi All
My 51 plate, 40K, pug 206 2 litre HDi has developed a whine from the engine compartment.
This whine changes with engine speed even when the car is not being driven, other than this the car is fine. I wonder if it could be the alternator is there any way I can pin point the problem.

Does it have a cam belt, and if so has it been changed recently? An overtight belt will whine.

To check if the alternator might be making the noise. Open the bonnet and then switch on large electrical loads like heated rear window/heated seats/headlights etc., if this makes matters worse alternator or its drive belt may be at fault.

thank you for your replys, I tried with the more load option, I must confess it didn't make any difference. Not sure if that is good or bad!
